Is it wise...

...to put your laptop in the freezer even for a minute? That's what my friend did when he called me for help. He said that his laptop was normally overheating.

I used some of the canned air that I had to clean out any dust from the fan intakes and I told him to buy a laptop-elevating platform [really cheap and simple]. What it does is simply raises your laptop just enough allow the fans on the bottom to breathe more easily.

Anyays, back to the question. I went to friend and the firt thing he does is pull his laptop out of the "freezer". I was like "WTF". :o

He said he only put it in their for a moment to get me. I told him not to do it again because I was concerned about what the freezer would do to either the hard drive or the curcuits.

Cold won't do anything to it. If it's cold enough then the battery might go kaput but the rest should be fine. They do after all have liquid nitrogen cooled computers which are far cooler than any freezer. What could be a problem though is moisture freezing to its insides so it wouldn't be advisable.

Can't extreme cold damage an LCD screen? I thought I read that, or heard it somewhere. ???

All of the components of an sensitive electrical device should nit be exposed to extremes of temperature.

That and extreme heat. That's how I broke my CD player screen last year at the shore, because it was baking in the 95

cold isnt the problem, the moisture buildup is.

They once got an AMD Athlon 700 running on 1 GHz with a phase change unit. Came to -40C
It proved to be faster than a real 1GHz Athlon that was released a few weeks after that.

At temperatures below 0C the 'speed' of the silicium increases.
