The Odd Couple

Here's a happy little tale to cheer everyone up. Now say Awwww. :D

Odd couple make friends in Kenya

Image

A baby hippo rescued after floods in Kenya last week has befriended a 100-year-old tortoise in Kenya.

The one-year-old hippo calf christened Owen was found alone and dehydrated by wildlife rangers near the Indian Ocean.

He was placed in an enclosure at a wildlife sanctuary in the coastal city of Mombasa and befriended a male tortoise of a similar colour.

According to a park official, they sleep together, eat together and "have become inseparable".

"Since Owen arrived on the 27 December, the tortoise behaves like a mother to it," Haller Park tourism manager Pauline Kimoti told the BBC News website.

"The hippo follows the tortoise around and licks his face," she said.

A 100 year old tortoise? Is that the name of it, or is it really that old? I have a hard time believing that an animal could live that long ::)

I have a great affection for Tortoises... ;D...!
My Mum and Dad always kept them since I was small.
Unfortunately, now and again they would forget to check them when they came out of hibernation in the cardboard box under the stairs...
...with unfortunate results... :'(...!
So that meant another trip to the pet shop to purchase another one... 8)...
...while the deceased one was buried with full Tortoise-shell Honours at the bottom of the garden....
...only to be dug up again some months later when his/her shell would be recovered and suitably polished with virgin olive oil and placed on top of the piano in fond remembrance.... ;)...!

All these years on, I miss my Tortoises, because they are now a protected species, (which is more than can be said for poor little Joey in his cardboard box coffin under the stairs), and cannot be sold in England any more...:'(...!
So if any kind Member has an unwanted tortoise, perhaps they could pop him in a shoe-box with some lettuce leaves, and post him to Fozzer to ease my sadness...:-[...!

Thank-you very much...;)...!

Paul...competing with Tortoises, regarding age....and speed.... ;)... ;D...!

I was watching a documentray about hippo's one day, Doug, and apparently they eat some meat too (if I remember rightly :))...one hippo pulled a man under the water and proceeded in trying to eat him...fortunatley the man is still alive ;)

(Remember - this info is not 100% accurate, it was a while ago when I saw the program)

Parrots can live upto 100 years in some cases from what I have heard. Several other animals can live to be that old. The general consensus is because cats and dogs only live to be 15 or so thats how old any animal can live it seems ::).
Mr Fozzer, isn't digging up a dead tortoise rather urmm, weird? ;) :D

I'm not saying they're not dangerous. They might be vegetarians but that doesn't stop them attacking people. I'm led to believe they can be a tad bad-tempered. :o ;)

The hippopotamus is strictly a vegetarian. Its diet consists mainly of terrestrial grasses.

Hippopotamus frequently raid agricultural crops. They can inflict a great deal of damage, and inhibit local economies. They are also highly aggressive creatures and have little fear of humans. They are considered among the most dangerous African animals.

Not when you can play Bach's Brandenburg Concertos on the piano, look at Joey's virgin olive oil polished shell in pride of place on top of the piano, and remember him with great affection...8)...!

Trust me... ;)...!

Joey seems a strange name for a tortoise. Are you sure he wasn't a budgie? ;) :D

PS. Maybe he was a tortoise that thought he was a budgie. ;D

Is there a known reason to why they live so long?

They tend not to rush around a lot. :D

I'm still trying to figure out how a 150 year old giant tortoise was killed in a fall. Did he fall or was he pushed I ask myself. ::) ;)

LOL...!

"Joey" was a popular name for pet Tortoises in the 30's, 40, and 50's....

...in the same way that all our cats were called "Billy"...(male or female)...

...and I was called "What are you up to now?"...

LOL... ;D...!

Ah, how fashions change.  My next door neighbours had a tortoise in the 1970s. They called it Flash. :D
