New internet worm.....

According to the article, it only attacks through e-mails, but because I only use web based e-mail instead of an e-mail program like Outlook, as long as I don't open up e-mail attachments, I should be fine, right?

Correct.

Another way to fight off e-mail based worms is by simply making sure that your e-mails appear as plane text rather than html format.

I never open attachments anyways and I use Outlook. I only recieve 1 or 2 emails every few days. So, spam is never an issue for me since I use throw-away email addresses for any site that require registration.

Since a lot of worms can use address books, people should also be carefull when opening up attachments from people they know

I only use Outlook for work emails (reluctantly), and our exchange server is just rife with obviously bogus messages. We actually once had some genius in another office open an attachment on an "I love you" email, on the work server, about a year after that business was all over the news... if you wonder who ever falls for these stupid ploys, now you know.
I gotta get a new job....  ::)

I once worked in an office with a girl who opened up an uknown e-mail attachment with a computer on a big network. It didn't attack every system on the network, but it did get a few. We had fun with that one.

Does anyone remember several years ago when e-mails were circulating the internet telling people to delete a specific file from their window's directory? They claimed this file was supposedly a virus that came with windows, but was actually an important file. My boss in the same office should have known better, but he deleted the file from his system ::)
You mean like the setbug with its little teddy bear icon?
This gave rise to the Irish Virus:
Since Ireland is a little lax on technology, please open up your windows folder and delete these files...
[a list of files followed for you to personally delete] ::) 8)
