It looks like bicycles and riders will one day hit the speed limit.

Already possible.
in turkey you aren't allowed to go over 70Kmh on a bike. You can reach that speed downhill

I remember passing vehicles in a 40mph (@65kph) zone -- no telling how fast I'd been going on a bicycle ;D. Couldn't stop myself. Actually, I was using my old 3-speed and I was definately bicycling down a slope. 8)

Being quite a hardcore freeride/downhill rider i can safely say that is totally true, NOW! Speeds of 40mph are common territory

I think that was too subtle for some people...

With this talk of Armstrong winning, I think that might be difficult.

Considering he's announced his retirement from professional cycling, the only 'races' he'd be competing in would be for the Media.

That's what I meant about being too subtle  ;D

Well, the Guineas Book of Records for the fastest biking is quite different from what appears to be suggested as fast in that article. I guess though this is trying to maintain speed rather than reach something amazing as this guy did in the link.

See this guy for some speed. ;)

Yes I remember that.  He had such a large chainwheel that he couldn't even pedal below 50mph.  He had to be towed up to speed behind a special car with a huge aerodynamic fairing, then he let go as the car accelerated away and he tried to keep up with it.  Not surprisingly with little or no air resistance, he reached that 167mph record before the car got away from him.  He also ran out of smooth surface to ride on, and his brakes melted when he tried to slow down too rapidly!

IMHO the real record should be given to someone riding a bike unassisted, from a standing start.  Otherwise you may just as well strap on a parachute and ride out the door of a plane, then claim a new speed record on the way down.
