Online Car Insurance

Anyone here who lives in the US and gets car insurance online?

The reason i'm asking is that i've been on my mom's account, but since I don't even live with her anymore, it would be easier if I got my own account somewhere. A couple reasons I'm considering getting insurance online is that I've known a few people who recommended it, and since i'm not expecting to live in the area for long, I don't want to have to move my account between physical insurance carriers in the area.

So, what are your experiences with getting car insurance online, and would you recommend it to anyone?

my grandmother works for allstate at home office in northbrook, IL.

yet she uses state farm...

anywaay... lol, geico? or esurance? those are the only 2 online that i know of.

My grandfather once had insurance with state farm. He was in an accident, well, someone hit him, and even though it wasn't my grandfather's fault, the insurance refused to pay for the vehicle repairs

Here's a question for you. I know we're required to have vehicles insured, but If you don't have car insurance, and you buy a used car from someone, is it ok to drive it home without breaking the law?

I may be going to look at a '94 Nissan Sentra, and it's about 70 miles away, and I was curious.

the laws differ from state to state.

My answer would be that if you do not have insurance on a vehicle, that you run the risk of getting a ticket for driving a vehicle without insurance and you also run the risk if god forbid you get into an accident, you can be held personally liable for any damages done, both bodily and property.

People do it, just be careful.

DO NOT CANCEL YOUR CURRENT INSUARNCE UNTIL YOU GET ANOTHER POLICY IN FORCE.
MOST STANDARD INSUARNCE COMPANIES WILL REQUIRE YOU NOT TO HAVE A LAPSE IN INSURANCE.

Make sure that you have gotten the plates off the vehicle that was totalled.

They will not run your DMV UNLESS you show a history of accidents. So you need not worry about them finding out and raising your rate or dropping you as they will not check again.

Don't know how it works in the US but in the UK it's best to be honest about previous incidents. Otherwise you might find they won't pay up if you're subsequently involved in an accident. I suspect any insurance company would check out this DMV (whatever that might be) before settling any claims.
