This thread was never meant to start a political discussion on Iraq. Remember that. All I have to say is this, this kid is either brave or just plane nuts.

Well, at least he learned his lesson in the end. The lesson, from what I understand, be happy with what you have.

Plain nuts, especially because he didn't speak the language at all.

And even if you find a moroccan or egyptian to teach you some basic arabic you won't understand a word of the dialects (northern and southern) spoken there

He just is beyond disbelief. I read this eariler on the BBC - can't figure how he wasn't killed. One words from his lips would have indicated his land and beckoned his death.

Guts? yes. Brains? no, I don't think so. My first thought when reading that was "what an idiot". The part where he refused to pay the cab driver ::). This is a place where people get shot at for being American, and you want to argue with them about cab fare? He is indeed lucky to be alive.

I don't think "nuts, out f skull, crazy" quite covers it.  Does this kid have any freaking inkling of just how dangerous it is in Baghdad right now?  He's a ****ing dumbass is what he is.  Completely naive and idiotic.

My question, and maybe someone can answer this for me because I didn't read the four pages-how the hell did a 16 year old get into Iraq without anyone knowing about it?

His parents were away, he had nine hundred bucks, found himself an uber cheap airline, got his passport together and went.

Not that hard.

Heavens, I think I've stepped into another "pick on Flt.Lt.Andrew" night.

:o Not that hard? Speaking from experience, Andrew? ???
...Only in America!  ::)
The problem is that he didn't keep it "only" in America and, in another venture quite some time ago, it wasn't a young American that flew an unauthorized sightseeing flight into what was Russian airspace. Nevertheless, as I said in the "Pledge" thread, we (U.S.) are a conglomerate.

How he went in there... my assumption

As his father works in the medical section and comes from there he could have made up a letter to a medical organisation with his father's name on it, perhaps even the hospital where his fater is working.

Personally i think that the whole thing was known by his parents from a to z and that they only called the embassy to get him back to the USA before something happened to him.
Because he went to the AP office his plan was busted and then he got a lift with the 101st airborne to the airport.
If he hadn't reported to the AP office he probably would have taken a taxi back to Kuwait a few days later and returned just the way he came.
