Nobody is suggesting she's stupid.

Hagar (and everyone else), if you felt I was accusing you of suggesting that, then I apologize.

All I was saying is that Retarded people may know more that you think they do.

Also, I never read anything that said she was "stone deaf".  Also if she is completely blind, then why does she wear glasses?

I think, judging from the pictures, that though she is legally blind and deaf, she can still hear and see a little.

But her life (and that of her family) in a lot of ways, sounds like a big, dark, tunnel...no light at the end.

However, I do have issue with whom gets sued and, particularly with an individual, why (if they were operating according to law/procedures, it's not they who should be sued).

You also have a point there H.  My father, a district judge downstate, handled a case where a deaf couple (who had lost custody of their children in a case) sued their attorneys.  He told me that no matter how he ruled, they still wouldn't have their kids back and the case felt pointless (in the end, he ruled in favor of the attorneys).

I just find that this is one of those cases where the story is probably not as simple as it seems, and though it may sound funny to think about, it's really not.

I took no offence Jordon, I was just making my position clear. As usual we don't have enough information to discuss this specific case. From the little knowledge I have on these matters I believe that someone born under these circumstances could often be completely blind & also stone deaf. This is why I mentioned the worst possible scenario. As for her being mentally retarded maybe this is more down to her physical disabilities rather than mental problems. The frustration she must feel is enough to drive anyone mental.

I've known several young people with Downs Syndrome over the years. One used to live next door to me & he was the nicest boy you could wish to meet. He wasn't stupid either. ;)

PS. After a little research I've discovered that rubella during pregnancy can cause severe sight & hearing defects to the unborn child so it appears I got the wrong idea. It states in the article that this woman is blind & deaf & I took that to mean totally. I don't think I was alone in that assumption.

I think there's very little doubt that the woman in question knows very little, if anything, about the case. The article states that, due to a statute of limitations, the parents themselves were unable to sue. The same restriction obviously does not apply to the affected individual. Therefore in order to bring a case it *had* to be brought by the daughter. At the same time, the Law does not discriminate against disability, therefore the guardians of a disabled person must be able to initiate a legal case on the behalf of someone who is not able to do it for themselves, whether. or not they have the ability to understand.

The fact that the affected person has to sue a doctor for "letting" them live is more a reflection on an ass of a legal system and the horrific way in which the parents of disabled children, and disabled people generally, are treated by their governments.

The law is an ass, for creating this situation. Society is an ass for making these people feel this is their only way forward.

Outliving my middle son is one of my greatest fears. That's what is motivating these people. What's crap is that this appears to be the best solution open to them.

This whole situation makes them high profile, visible the world over; simultaneously they are an object of derision, and the standard bearers of disabled people fighting for support from society. The sad thing is that all they want is the confidence that their daughter will be self sufficient after they themselves have died, something that most people take for granted.

Fundamentally they really do not want to do this, but what alternative are they offered? A woman in Britain recently was given a suspended sentence for smothering her 30-something Downs syndrome son. She was in her mid 60's and had been his sole carer for all his life. There, but for the grace of your chosen divine entity (or absence thereof), go any of us.
