The author makes some interesting points, and it makes sense how some people get tired of the flight simulators.

How many of you have had this happen?

I have never burnt out but I do sometimes have a change of diet. If I'm a tad bored with FS I go off to CFS2 for a little and kill stuff If I'm feeling particularly brainless I might play one of the Star Wars games for a bit and hack thousands of Imperial Stormtroopers to death with a lightsaber.

 I get burned out on any type of game after a while, or pretty much any other hobby for that matter, then I just do other stuff until my interest returns.

I didn't read the article but if I get interested in something I give it 100%. I find that these things usually run their course, I lose interest & go on to something else. My interest in the various M$ sims has lasted much longer than I expected & replaced some of my previous hobbies rather than combining some as I originally intended. I haven't even looked at my R/C models for over 3 years now. I tried various other sims before discovering CFS1 & Simviation but I have no interest in other computer games. The addons were the main attraction for me at the time & that's all I'm involved with now. When I got my first PC I told everyone that I had no intention of ever playing games on it & that was perfectly true at the time.

It hasn't happened since I've started my RL training, but yea, I used to binge for months and then take a few months break.

Excellent article, many of the things he mentioned are very applicable to myself and I'm sure many others.

i, unfortunately, have become kinda unintrested in flight sim right now, since i have been grounded from the computer since june (yeah riiight...)

i'm trying to pull up one lousy F, then i can try to regain my Fs fun.

I've not had "Burn out" more, I've discovered EA Games's "Battlefield" series of games, since BF2, my poor old CFS collections gathered dust....
FS9 and its choppers are all the better for it though, its nice to get back to a proper sim.  8)

I'm going to re-install my CFS2 Dambusters add on (Just Flight Payware) as I'm suffering CFS2 withdrawl me thinks...  ;D


I do spend hours on FS2002 however, my nephew George (6) loves to fly Concorde on my sisters old & slow PC....  ::)

The author didn't mention the "try to make your FS as good looking and realistic as possible and still be disappointed with the results and frame-rates" kind of burn-out. Personal experience, I tell you.

I think I experienced this FS Burn-Out two or three years ago & never recovered.

I definitely have flight sim burn out.  Type 1 too.  I always found myself just searching for some kind of purpose.  The problem was somewhat alleviated when I downloaded the lovely Beech 18S, but for me, half the appeal of flying is looking down and realizing you're in the air, and flat ground doesn't cut it.  For the life of me I've never been able to remedy short autogen draw distances.

That's why I'm all for realistic scenery. But that wish never come true.

I try to balance it via other games (I just got a Nintendo DS).

I don't fly as much as I used to (less free time...especially since I got a job).

But too much of anything is unhealthy...

I suffer from short-term New Toy Tunnel Vision...but I usually fly anywhere and with anything...so I kinda don't classify into that category

I got hitched onto computers in the late 1970's-early 1980's with the introduction of the Sinclair, Commodore, Amstrad, Atari, Amiga, etc, computers...
I now have a collection of most of the old 8-bit and 16-bit computers... ...!

All this means that I have been stuck on my arse in front of a monitor for around 35 years...which is not good for recommended exercise in the leg department... ......!

My first introduction to flight sims was on the old 8-bit machines, (Gunship, etc), and gradually progressed to the latest Flight sims on the modern PC.
I do spend most/all of my time with Microsofts flight sims, (up to 18 hours a day, 7 days a week.....), interspersed with various other flight sims, (Micro Flight, Gunship,etc), and the occasional blast on Doom 3, Hardwar, Quake....and the various Computer Emulator programs for "old stuff"......!
So, all in all, I spend much too much time sat on my arse fiddlin' with joysticks and keyboards for my own good......!

I don't exactly get burned out, I just get the urge to fly less from time to time. Right now as a matter of fact I haven't used FS in several days, but partly due to computer problems. Hopefully that's fixed for good now, but I kind of doubt it.
