Oh dear - the US has been tortured by the elements this year. I hope it doesn't do anything... you truly have had your share of rotten weather for at least one year.

Saitek is speaking from the legendary ancient knowledge of the (Milesian) Scots around him; to Scotland from Spain, to Northwest Africa from Egypt, (and with a little back-and-forth with trials and battles) to Egypt from the lands of Greece. Now you know the stormy source of your A-B-Gammas. :P

I thought hurricane and tornado season would have been long over by now. It's snowing up here while you guys down south are still getting hit by summer storms ::)

I think hurricane season officially ends next week, and there is no "tornado" season, although they occur more often in the spring when the weather is most unstable, a tornado is possible at any time of the year.

Ben is quite correct except that this system does not come into use until the 21 allotted names for the season have run out. If my dodgy mental arithmetic is correct this would make Gamma the 24th tropical storm this season.

All you wanted to know on the subject of naming tropical storms here. http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/aboutnames.shtml
I notice that Felix has been chosen for 2007.

In the event that more than 21 named tropical cyclones occur in the Atlantic basin in a season, additional storms will take names from the Greek alphabet: Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, and so on.

And I"m not overly anxious to have that name retired from the recurring list ...  as no doubt Katrina and Rita will be after this year!
