In Hungary they seem to know how to deal with criminals. Over here he would have been let off almost certainly if under 16. If over 16 he may have just got a telling off or a few hours community work if he had no previous convictions.
After several centuries of gradual evolution of the law & law enforcement we seemed to have got it about right until some 30 or 40 years ago. I never figured out why we let these do-gooders change everything so drastically in such a short space of time. Then they wonder why people have no confidence in the law or the police.
PS. The same thing can be said for the education system.
