Another Civil Rights Pioneer...

I thought another deserved mentioning as well.

Vivian Malone Jones...her name may not be familiar when you hear it, but she was one of the two students (James Hood was the other one) who wanted to enroll at the University of Alabama.  She passed away Oct. 13.

When they tried to enroll, Governor George Wallace blocked them off.  He refused when asked to comply with a federal court order (remember that protesters had fire hoses and police dogs turned on them in other parts of the state).  The Alabama National Guard was mobilized to enforce the order, and the students were allowed to register for classes.

Vivian had a very lonely existence there.  She knew how big this issue was, the magnitude of the impact this would have.  And she faced it bravely.

There are two sites that will give you more information:

One bit from the second one.  She met with Wallace again, in 1996 (two years before his death).  She was named as the first recipient of the Lurleen B. Wallace Award for Courage:

"I asked him why did he do it," she said. "He said he did what he felt needed to be done at that point in time, but he would not do that today. At that point, we spoke -- I spoke -- of forgiveness."

such a shame, glad we live in this day in age where this stuff wouldn't happen, or that what would you liked to think. in some countries discrimination is a big thing, i'm not sure how it is there in the states but here in New Zealand, we denie that we a racist against other races in this country yet we still are racest against each other, we are a really mixed culture of ethnic groups. asains, samoans, other islanders and maoris, not just white people thare are the majority. heck i was the only white kid in my music class in 4th form! not that i have a problem against other ethnic, even i have gotten used to/ have growen up with different types of people. my first culture shock was when i went to a Heavy metal concert and i saw nothing but white people :o no maoris, no samoans, just white peps! that was abit of a wake up call, and suprising for me to be in a room big hall fall of white people, thought it be the opisite. oh well.

Well, I don't blame those people in the concert. Tell me, how often do you see a latin guy banging his head to KISS music. ::)

Soy latino y yo nunca escuche ese musica. ::)

*excuse the misspelling -if any- and I'm too lazy to type in accent marks*

Too sad. Hopefully they will be like Kilroy and have consequences that reach far beyond their existance. I was a big fan of Rosa Parks. Imagine a woman who sparks a whole civil rights movement because she was tired that day (her own words when asked why she didn't give up her seat). Makes me wish more people would get "tired".  ;D
