Thanks for the vote of confidence Ben. I'd rather not be an ornament. Sounds too much like part of the furniture. Going by the names I've been called you might be surprised at what some people think of me. :o :D

Like when people write 'l8ter' instead of 'later'

They're not even saying it right then. If they actually said that in English, it'd be "late-t-er".

Sounds like they have a speech impediment. ::)

Actually, that's about the only "text-speak" I can identify readily, and I though it was "l8r".

See, they even get pedantic about text speak. :o What's text speak for text speak?

Might be easier to learn proper English & done with. Then I can have some fun. If you want pedantic, I'm your man - but I need to understand the lingo first. :D

Like Fozzer, I usually stick to the less serious threads, unless it's aviation or flightsim oriented. That's why you see a lot of smilies in my posts instead of trying to compete with someone in a serious debate. The last time I said anything in a 'serious' thread, somebody misunderstood me and jumped all over it ::)

So, I come to relax, and try to stay in the more 'less serious' threads and have fun instead of getting all worked up over some heated discussion ;)

Actually, text speak has been around much longer than the internet. Long ago, it was used on vanity plates (as long as it's rendered respectable, for some extra cash they'll put your request on the vehicle license plate). Of course, this was originally done because you're only allowed so many characters. When it's done in regular text without abbreviating the word length it seems quite unnecessary unless it makes a special reference to something else.

..(remember an argument doesn't have to be heated or rude in any way)
Thus we preferably call it a discussion. ;)
Of course, one can't be sure how some beenie-weeinies will interpret the demeanor of what's said so, thankfully, we have our smiley's around here. 8)

As for textspeak TSC I don't think anyone with a post count above 2 uses it.

I've seen it creeping here & there, but i'm not going to point fingers over something which is really just a pet hate of mine, after all, it's not the end of the world is it.

Actually, that's about the only "text-speak" I can identify readily, and I though it was "l8r".

Thats my whole point, even when they try to use 'text speak' they fudge it up & don't even save any space so it becomes completely pointless.

When it's done in regular text without abbreviating the word length it seems quite unnecessary unless it makes a special reference to something else.

Thankyou, my point exactly. I've even seen people use 'text speak' that, far from abbreviating a certain word, it actually lengthened it, ridiculous.

Cheers,

TSC.

One of those fascinating little peculiarities of the Human race. It's completely illogical but we were never too logical at the best of times. ;)

I find that outside of the comical Fozzer Family most conversations finally develop into an argument, often quite nasty, especially on Internet Forums, and much too unpleasant for me to get involved in.... ;)...!

We Fozzers have our own outlook on life, which always involves a lot of harmless fun, which some others may take objection to... ::)...!
I mean, just how controversial can a few pics of my dins, together with its accompanying recipe be...;)...?
...or saying "Buggar" if I burn my fingers in the oven...?
...I ask you...?

LOL...!

One thing that makes me wary of entering into any conversation  (and I agree that it's an art) is having been told to my face "...when you strike up a conversation with someone, make sure that person cares what you're talking about ... "  That's one reason why, in real life, I am quite the silent type (Not that you would realize it from my postings!)

However, writing in forums like these can actually improve one's practice of the art - if not of conversation (spoken), at least that of writing.  Writing in these forums, if carefully done, forces you to be careful of not only what you say, or HOW you say it.

For example, recently, in relation to another thread, I PM'd a fellow.  As soon as I hit the "send" button, I had a little premonition that maybe, just maybe, he might take what I wrote in the wrong way (as Doug knows, my "unusual" sense of humor sometimes gets in the way of my stating matters clearly).  I reread what I wrote and even to me, I could read the same words and the same paragraphs and clearly interpret them in two opposite ways.

As luck would have it, the fellow - no fault of his own - misunderstood my point.  Of course we cleared up the issue, but I now recognize that, unless the person knows me very, very well, I still have to be clear as to what I mean.

Conversation, spoken or written, is an art form.  We can learn all about grammar, spelling, putting sentences together logically, and &c., but, as in many arts, practice makes perfect.

Having said that, there are times when the most effective reply is a turn of the head, raising of an eyebrow, even a well placed "smilie".

Hi Bjorn...
Ta, Mate... ;D...!

You may, or may not, be pleased to know that I can not be separated from my wiener.... ;)...!
Wherever I go, it goes, as well... ;D...!
LOL...!

...anyway...>>>

Some people are born to be argumentative...:o...!

One of my lovely step-sons, and his lovely wife, have an in-built habit of arguing with me, (or anyone else), over every subject that is brought up...!

No matter what is said, they automatically insist on voicing exactly the opposite point of view....just on principle...!

Which means that I generally refrain from any sort of conversation with them....which is a shame... :'(...!

To me, one of the most stressful things in life is an un-necessary argument about something quite un-important...!

Even if you disagree, just an accepting nod of the head is quite sufficient to avoid a blinding argument...;)...!
Trust me...;D...!
LOL...!

Paul The Stress-Free... ;D...!

I will run a million miles to avoid an argument....
..and avoid a heart attack... ;)...!
