The art of conversation

Postby Craig. » Tue Oct 11, 2005 3:28 pm

I have noticed an ever downward spiral in the art of debate and conversation among certain people here and elsewhere. Replies that consist of +1 to a statement or a ;D. It would be nice if reasons were given why you agree at least then it wouldn't seem like you were padding your stats. Plus its amazing the sorts of conversations you can have when you put some effort into it.

Maybe people are scared of saying too much in case they incriminate themselves. :o

But don't worry .... your old mate Hagar is here. ;D That never bothered me & I can go on for as long as you want & usually much longer than most people would like me to. ::) :D

Yes, but when we do open our mouths and debate we get scolded 99,7% of the time... ;)

Theres nothing wrong with a debate and backing up a point or argument where it doesn't cross the lines of the rules here, is preffered. If its a little more sensitive use the PM system, I do with several members and it works well for those sorts of things.

Well, if you want a conversation someone has to start it & give us something to talk about. Here's your chance Craig. Go for it. ;D

I dont mind '+1' or ' ;D' - what I can't stand is 'text speak' - you've got a whole keyboard, bl**dy use it!!! It's not like were pushed for space is it??

Like when people write 'l8ter' instead of 'later' - you haven't even saved any spaces!!!

Anyone whos uses 'text speak' can read my avatar for as long as they like, on principle I won't respond to any post using 'text speak'.

Cheers,

TSC.

+1 posts are ok as long as the "plus 1" is given plus an explanation of why it is plus 1. :P

I guess it is a quick way of showing, before one launches into reason that one agrees Craig. I prefer not to use it - but that's me. As for textspeak TSC I don't think anyone with a post count above 2 uses it. ;)

You hate that way of language Doug more than anyone. ;D I think the older generation are less tolerant of bad English. Probably English standards were higher before the mobile phones and email inventions came.

If a person cant provide something even slightly useful to a debate in the cases I am on about then dont bother at all, if you dont have time to provide that sort of response then think of one till you do and provide it. You dont just have a conversation with a person or group in person and then say +1 if you agree with something they say, you carry on the conversation. It shows lack of interest and understanding if you dont. You missed my point to begin with. Theres no need for +1 posts if your going to give reasons or an argument. (remember an argument doesn't have to be heated or rude in any way)
