So...Whos up on the stock markets???

Postby Triple_7 » Mon Oct 10, 2005 10:14 pm

Needing some consulting here....In my economics class we just started a stock market simulation that uses the real stocks.  It is a state-wide deal started off today and ends in 10 weeks.  In the end there is cash prizes for the winning teams from the county...and another for the state.

Anyways, since its only 10 weeks we are in need of stocks with a lot of flexibility.  Each team starts with $100,000 to "invest."  So far my team has invested about 48,000 of it in 3 stocks...Boeing, Exon, and Ebay.

Basicaly our plan is to buy large amounts of shares and sell out as soon as they gain at least $1.25.  Since this is only 10 weeks long we want stocks that are up and down daily by at least $1.  Though Boeing is my personal choice for the one long term investment (roughly $12,500) ;)

So...who has any ideas as to the best to buy into?...We know the oil companies are changing drasticaly it seems.  So trying to keep track over a couple of days and see just how it goes.  Once bought we can not sell them till the next day...so no day trading :-/

I remember doing this back at high school, but I sucked @55. Only gain $1 in the whole 10 weeks and I had no idea what the heck I was doing. ;D

I can never understand the stock market. It involves too much math [which I hate with a passion].

I have only a basic understanding of the unbelievably complex stock market, and unfortunately that little insight won't be gaining you any insider tips triple :P

Stock markets are evil. Leave them alone.

Dont sell on small gains. The stock markets for long term interests only. To be fair you only have a short time but dont sell untill the day before your project is due to end. Also get all the old reports you can. See how they have performed over the last Week, month, 6 months and year. Also dont go for the big name companies as a whole. These are the ones who are most effected by world events, especially Boeing, Exon and ebay. Invest in some smaller companies, they tend to be quite stable which is what you ideally want from a company

Pharmaceuticals, chemicals and high tech stocks.  You will notice that the NASDAQ moves much more than other indexes.

Are you allowed to play the currency markets?  You could make a killing on the Yen... ;)
