Well let me ramble on....

I'm Currently a student at the Sheffield College studying Advanced ICT communications (worth double A-level), and doing many critia such as;

I'd go and visit your local recruitment/temping agencies, and they should be able to give you a better idea of what's on offer...

Its horrible aint it?...My parents basically give me the money for what i really need. Food...and cloths etc.

"but now am' older" i need to get "mi' own dosh" for the things i want, which i can understand.

BUt what i dont understand is why people are not employing people, and why people are been so picky about things!

I can't really help Jimbo as I'm no longer involved with this sort of thing. When I was younger it was very different & it's quite likely you could have got a job quite easily as an office boy or something like that. You would be expected to make the tea, run errands & do all sorts of menial tasks but you would also receive training in various jobs throughout the office. There were no computers then & it was all done manually but now I expect some of this training would be in what you wished to do. The wages weren't brilliant but you would at least be paid while you were learning. No business can afford to have dead wood & everyone must earn their keep.

Now, I've only ever worked for small companies & the larger ones might be completely different. Most small companies work a 5 day week during normal office hours, 9 - 5 as they call it. I don't know how much free time you have but it might be difficult for one of these companies to employ part-timers as they don't work over the weekend. From what I understand from a friend who works for a large insurance company, they work every day of the week on a shift basis. This might suit you better but much would depend on what hours you can work. I'm not really sure if there's much opportunity for part-timers in the type of work you're interested in. Charlie's suggestion of the local employment agencies seems a good idea as even if they can't offer you anything right now they would know the situation in your local area.

If all other options fail, then the last place you would go for is the military. Keep looking for a job as hard as you can. Don't give up. Lady Luck might come around the corner.

I realise that Companys dont want a log floating about but im trying to suggest that my college experience and also the fact that im learning would make companys interested.....Maybe not

One point that you must realise Jimbo. Companies are in business to make a profit. They're not schools & while some can offer specialised training, others are only interested in employing fully-trained & qualified staff. The usual way of doing this in my day would be the opposite of what you're doing. Join a company on a full-time basis & attend college part-time at evening classes after work. This was usually paid for by the company & some would allow you one day a week to attend college. This was called day-release. My brother did exactly the same thing & after learning the business went on to become Shipping Manager of one of the biggest flight simulator companies in the world at that time. He took over my job when I retired which was rather fortunate or I would still be working.

Jimbo, as a 16-year old who was getting paid ten dollars an hour (that's A LOT) to do something he was most definitely not qualified for, in an office on the seventeenth floor with a view of city hall (as the other employees, who were doing work in their cubicles, shot dirty glances at ), I can tell you personally-it helps to know the boss

It's very important to have an in-and if you don't have one, find somebody who does.  I know for a fact that you can get paid internships through many colleges, you should check at yours. Perhaps one of your teachers knows someone in the industry who can help you out.

Try some of the small local companies and ask around. I got my first summer job setting up a companies PC database that way, I was all of 16. Ironically the week after I finished they won a new PC to replace the Amstrad (some exhibition prize draw), so I had to go in and do it all over again. Got me enough dough to get my driving licence and a car a few months later on

If your college is that good then they should be able to help you. Ask your tutors!

When I was studying stage management um-ti-tum  years ago one of my tutors came up with a fantastic work placement for me. 3 months touring the Scottish Highlands and Islands fully paid and in charge of all logistics for a 6 person cast and crew. Fantastic experience of everything from Major theatres in cities such as Aberdeen, to tiny shacks (village halls) in the middle of nowhere where we had to get power for the lighting rig from the village lampost.

It sometimes pays to badger your tutors if they are any good they should have their ears to the local job situation.

I would definately suggest an internship. A freind of mine did that for a few hours a day between and after classes.
