Methinks it is time for thee and me Doug to have a nice cup of tea, the universal cure-all ;)

Anyway - it's unlocked because I saw no heat there at all - Kevin was slighly perturbed as he started the debate - that's all ...

& Yes - Americans knock their politicians exactly the same as Europeans do - though it tends to be those of the more liberated & intellegent of mind.....  just the same as europeans.

All I know from a Mod's point of view is that past history shows when a thread starts to take on certain tones, it usually ends up going the wrong way.

I am sorry for pointing out Woody, and I apologize,  :P   :-*

There was an attempt on the President's life  right outside Blair House, or didn't you know that?

And if we're going to point fingers, I was just stating my feelings on the topic. It was Ben (Thepianoman) who dragged the politics out of it.

And I apologized for that... :-*

Well...this situation is rather...hairy...!  ;D ;D ;D

For my two cents, the criticism always seemed to come from more conservative members who seemed offended that anyone would dare disagree with their point of view (and whoever did must really hate America...)

Actually, I can think of one member who stirred the pot over it (hence why I didn't respond much in this forum for a bit).

But that member is gone now...I see no reason that the rule can't be relaxed a bit more to the way it was before...we're all mature people...are we not?

I still think you're missing my point Dave. Americans might well knock their own politicians & G. W. Bush :-X the presidential candidate obviously has his supporters & opponents. However, once he becomes President most Americans take offence at any criticism of him whether they support him or not. It goes further than that. They take it as a personal insult against themselves & their country. This is how it appears to me anyway.

I am by no means sticking my own foot in this somewhat boiling pot of sticky goo,but I have a comment on behalf of many of my fellow Americans and myself:
Those you speak of are really not the majority, and their numbers are dwindling. They get more attention because they are louder most of the time. There's plenty of grumbling, some intelligent, some not... rarely heard from as far away as Europe.
But then again, most of us are as quick to blindly defend our national pride as we are to  criticize our own "gummint" amongst ourselves...  makes for mixed signals, especially when responding to criticism from abroad.
