What is the strangest to me is how colleges are starting to look at cheating.

Cheating is big business now. With a large percentage of marks being awarded for coursework it's very easy on the Internet. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/education/251419.stm
We couldn't do that in my day as coursework was not taken into account. Everything was written by hand in the examination room. If you didn't know the answers you failed. Simple as that.

I've also read about teachers giving their students sample answers to exams. All they had to do was copy them & hand them in. This was discovered when comparing answers from students attending the same school. They were identical. This is more than cheating, it's organised fraud on a large scale. If that doesn't deserve punishment I don't know what does.

Teachers who aid in cheating should be horsewhipped, but I can see how they're driven to it if their schools' funding depends on student grade averages- they're paid less than street-sweepers in this country.

Why? Cheating means you are getting qualifications you haven't earned which you could then use to get a job you can't handle which could lead to trouble!
Take for example an architect who doesn't know his sums building a bridge that collapses killing 100 people... would you object then if you were one of the relatives of those people?
Personally I'm in favour of it, here we expel students cheating in exams.

Strangely, folks:
I was assigned for training on a different radar unit and wound up at odds with the Senior Master Sergeant in charge. A trainee was required to add their own initials to each task completed. I refused to sign unless I felt I knew the material well enough. Previously, it meant a bit of running to and fro but I was able to successfully operate the prime, multi-unit system I'd been assigned to by myself.
I may not succeed in learning everything about something but I try my best to learn as much as I can. Someone here subscripts the quote about "better to be a fool than open your mouth and prove it." Don't learn anything so that you won't have open your mouth: you'll not only look like a fool -- you'll be one.

I find it hard to believe that ANYbody honestly believes that SEVEN years in prison is a just punishment for cheating.

That's like saying assault should be a capital crime.
