I have never cheated in school.  I never really saw a reason too (even when I was a poor student).  When I was younger I had pretty bad grades but at least they were my own.

But, I once got suspended for cheating when I was in the 8th grade.  What happened was I left my folder with a homework assignment on my desk and went to the bathroom or something just before class.  One of my friends hadn't finished his homework so he just decided to copy the last little bit of mine.  I had no idea he was doing it, I wasn't even in the room.  Anyway, the teacher saw him sitting at his desk frantically copying it.  So, we both got sent to the principal's office and in the end they suspended both of us because we were equially at fault (they didn't believe me when I said that I didn't give it to him-I was somewhat of a regular in the principal's office).  Anyway, nothing bad really happened though because my parents believed me.  So, they suspended me (for 1 day) which was a Friday.  I basically spent the day playing video games but I was pretty mad that they didn't believe me.

Well, everything that needs to be said has been said.

All I have to say is yeah, cheating sucks.  But prison for seven years? No, don't think so.  That's not right.  Especially Chinese prison. (I've seen things on the discovery channel)

And Mark, as to your architecture example?  Let me quote Law and Order: "We don't punish people for crimes they haven't committed yet, Mr. McCoy."

I'm no angel, but I never cheated in school. School cheaters often get rapidly left behind in the adult world, when they're finally really tested...

Ditto!

Now, I was born and raised a Christian so I would never think of cheating

I'm an adjunct college professor... and this subject has gotten a lot of attention at recent faculty meetings.  The practice is becoming rather rampant....what with camera phones, wireless PDA's, and so on.  Not to mention the raft of internet pre-written research paper stuff available.

We have a strong writteen policy...... and take cheating and plagerism rather seriously.  But no jail terms....... YET  ;).

It makes it so that as a prof... I have to keep on top of what is "commercially available" to make sure that I'm getting a student's own writing... not something they bought or "lifted" off the net.

Another interesting phenomona is that I have to specify sometimes that ALL the references/footnotes in a paper cannot be solely from web-based resources.  There are these old, dusty things called .....what was that...... oh yeah.... "books".

I often do seraches of sections of "key sentences" from a paper in Google to see if I get hits  ;D.  Oops... gave that one away!

best,

....................john
