The entire city of New Orleans has been ordered to evacuate as the levy waters will bring about 10 to 20 ft of water right into the city in the next day or so.
Here are a few pictures of the damage that Katrina has done.
Reminds me of the Tsunami!  :(

This is the worst disaster ever to strike the US, bar none.  Think about it, young people who are just now entering the work force will spend their entire lives rebuilding New Orleans.  It will take decades before this mess is all sorted out, and the city will never be the same.  The only silver lining to this is that when New Orleans is rebuilt, it will not have the same mish-mash of technology that most cities do.  It will be modern, organized, and an example of what can be done with a fresh start.

I think it's a safe bet Mardi Gras is off for next year...

you know what hits the spot, is when people think that it's ok to start looting stores...

but anyway, it's still not alright to start stealing everything, how about get out of there while you still can, there's nothing left for you until the floods recede.

I think it's absolutely disgusting how people are looting like this.  In the scope of such a disaster, all they care about is grabbing the last bag of cheetos or a Fur coat (what are they going to do with it in 20 ft water anyway?).  I mean really, where are they taking these things?  Home?  The entire city is being evacuated, and odds are their homes were destroyed anyway.

I have a friend who is stationed [or should I say was stationed] on Keesler AFB, Miss. It is located right next to the beach in Biloxi. It's so close you can see the shore from within the gates. Him and I were buddies since Basic.

They evacuated the entire base. My supervisor tells me that Keesler AFB is probably no more, or at least reduce by a huge chunk. :(

And to top it all off, that base is where I use to finish my Techinical Training to become a pharmacy tech. And let me tell you, the hospital in that base is pretty big. I can't imagine and I feel real sorry about what the patients are going through. Elderlies in wheelchairs, diabetics, patients who are so sick they can't be outside for too long. :(

Obviously, they already evacuated in time.

My Mom just made an interesting comment. She said when all these other countries had disasters on this scale, the U.S. was one of the first to rush to their aid. Now we're the ones who got walloped big time and these same countries are laughing at us, and our so called "freinds" are not lifting a finger to send aid. I say we pull our troops back home to help in the rebuilding efforts, and tell the rest of the world it's on its own, we've got our own problems now.

A similar thought had occurred to me but I don't know about "so-called friends" laughing. Just what are you implying? ::) I have every sympathy & haven't seen anyone laughing. I imagine much the same would happen if a similar disaster struck the UK. As the wealthier countries in the world we're expected to sort out our own problems.

Anyone who thinks others are laughing at this need to pull their heads out their ass. Sorry but its that simple. As for other help. Right now there is little outsiders can do. There is no way they can get anywhere near the scene. This thing only happend two days ago, it can take 3 or 4 just to even have the stuff arranged to be there. When it is possible i can assure you there will be help. Until then though as Doug said, we wealthier more modern countries are expected to be able to deal with these things, thats why we are the first to attend those who cant.

I was just saying this a few minutes ago as I was watching the news. I will be very surprised if any foreign countries offer any assistance, remember, we are the big bully of the world even though we help pretty much everyone, most often before we worry about our own problems.

Very sad....

but I have a question or actually a statement....

Why on earth would you build a city by a large body of water that is under sea level...it makes no sense.

I haven't seen any appeals for outside help. I suspect that any offers would be seen as unwelcome interference & politely refused.
