This is allegedly the largest mobilization in the history of the Red Cross.

The French Quarter was the least hit by the flooding, but it's being looted like crazy.  Martial law sounds about in order.  It's one thing to scoop up food, water etc, but most reports say that looters are taking fur coats, fine china, etc.  I just heard on the radio one man was waiting for his family, including his son with Leukemia, to be evacuated to Houston, but people are shooting at the helicopters!  This is ridiculous chaos!  People are having to lock themselves in their houses and pull out all their guns!

Absolutely pitiful.

Shooting at the helicopters? time to send in some apaches for protection. Looting is one thing, but shooting at those trying to help, is just beyond pathetic.

I was shocked at what I saw on the news. The police were using guns and had arrested well over 100 looters. They put them all on a stretch of road as there was no prison. Little wretches - as if people hadn't lost enough to the flood that what they have left is nicked. >:(
I saw one film which  showed two men wheeling out the actual shelf of the shop with al the goods on it!

you know what hits the spot, is when people think that it's ok to start looting stores. i mean come one, first you disregard a MANDATORY warning to leave new orleans. then you want help because you lost your kids. remember it is your fault that you stayed.

i have no sympthay for him, because he chose not to leave. and bull$hit about not being able to go anywhere, plenty of people could have taken him in for a few days until he could get on his feet.

but anyway, it's still not alright to start stealing everything, how about get out of there while you still can, there's nothing left for you until the floods recede.

Shooting at the rescue helicopters!? its time to call in the f***ing military! For some reason that pisses me off more than anything else about this situation. :-/

The super dome is no picnic. No power, No AC, No Water, Hot as hell, bathrooms backed up and overflowing. Not to mention the smell from all the 9,000 + people sweating to death. One guy got so frustrated that he committed suicide by jumping off one of the stands into a walkway between the stands.

It must be bl**dy awful in there - & then on top of all the problem with no water, no AC, no decent sanitisation, probably no home to go back to - you then have to put up with some loser who has just commited suicide by spreading himself across the steps right next to you.

We can only hope that the survivors get themselves back on thier feet quickly.

Word going round is, those in the superdome are going to be moved to the Astrodome in Houston. At least there, they will have aircon, running fresh water, and pleanty of space. And not have to worry about the rising water levels.

On the news monday night they were showing where a street full of Antebellum homes in Biloxi had been swept clean by the storm. Earlier this summer I toured some of those homes and marvelled at all the wonderful decor inside and out. Now just a memory..... :-[
