PS. I haven't visited London for some time but I've never seen notices warning American tourists about over-generous tipping.

Tips are a reflection of performance, so in effect it is a "performance based" payment, much akin to sales staff in many department stores who are paid on commissions based on sales.



Absolutely, thats the way it should be - you get tipped if you do a good job, but this automatic 'service charge' is another matter.

I will never give a tip to a waiter/waitress or anybody else. You know why? Because it's their job. They get paid by their employer. And if they think they don't make enough money, find another job.

At bars especially, starting off with a nice tip does miracles.Get a reputation somewhere for being a non-tipper, and you'll find yourself getting the cold shoulder.
