Man you hit that nail on the head afi0yz.  Not to many things are made entirely here in the US...live off of imports from all over...Find somthing made in the US its usualy 3X the price :-/  Pisses me off even more now that our town just lost its 3rd factory to Mexico...another 204 people loosing their jobs end of the year  Problem is coming when the price of everything continues to rise over the past 3--4 years and wages havent moved and some have accualy decreased...Its happened before and history is looking to repeat itsself  :-X

Sooner or later, I'll be joining you guys in the bandwagon. My job and needs are really starting to become demanding and bike riding is starting to make me less productive. One way or another, I will have to get a car or a scooter. Therefore, I'll be next to pay the gas.

Actually, this is BRILLIANT strategic corporate managenment, you know.  

Why sell all that oil they are sitting on at the lower prices of yesterday?  If you control the supply in order to drive the prices up, THEN you can REALLY make a lot of money selling the stuff.  The oil in the ground and in reserves is literally "money in the bank".

And if you can get the government to fund some of your R+D for developing new sources.... even better.  That has let you cheaply find MORE money that you can keep "in the bank" until the price rises to suit your needs.

Katrina was a total disaster.... but I suspect that there are many, many oil executives hiding their smiles at this point in time.  The are getting richer every day that this continues on.

Don't expect the price in the US to go down too much either.  Once they have the public "used to" higher prices...... when it drops... it likely won't drop much.

One way to stand up against this is to simply not buy any gas, not go to work, not buy anything but nessesities, and wait it out...Unfortunatly that requires EVERYONE to take part.  Which would never happen since people just seem to think "well it will go down and things will get better" :-/  Nothing seems to have gotten better this year...those people are WAY to optomistic.  

Think about it...If no one buys gas, or goes to work, or goes to school...then it forces the government to step in and do something about it...They cant throw the whole US in jail  Though they would probably try :-/  Seems people are just to scared to take a stand  Though if the price gets up to the predicted $4 mark...That might change.  5 protesters wont get anywhere...A few hundred million on the other hand..........

Something probably will happen...Unfortunatly not in a good way...I took a little drive to get supper earlier...The one gas station had an employee up on a ladder scrubbing something off the price list (which is an electronic one)  As I got closer I relized what it said.  Someone had managed to spray paint the words "f^@#ing Rediculous" up there  I have a feeling this is just the start of gas station vandalism.  Unfortunatly that kind of stand up isnt going to help the situation what so ever :-/

 I don't know about the rest of the country, but I can't afford to just "not go to work" unless the bill collectors promise "not to f**k with me".

Gas here in southern New Hampshire was $2.58 a gallon yesterday afternoon.  It was $2.80 by 11 AM today.

It had gone to over $3 at the local Cumberland Farms. I drove down to Manchester - found 1 convenience station on Willow Street at $2.59. Have to try to make it last.

Just as a side note as to how desperate some people think it is there. I would buy a gas cap with a lock on it if you dont already have one. It is becoming more common that people are stealing the gas from peoples tanks overnight.

Fill-it-up and drive is what happens in holland... especially if the fuel station doesn't have cameras. Sometimes they take the pump with them (if they tank LPG where the thing locks on the filler)

Sorry but this wont work, as paz stated most people have to goto work. How long do you think the average person can hold out? And it doesnt work anyway, because sooner or later your going to have to fill up, the gas companies know this, dosnt matter to them if no-one buys it for a day or two.

i hear alot of attendants now wont turn on the pumps till its been pre paid, those who still allow pump first actually have binoculars to get license plates.

And everyone in europe stop saying we have it good, we've never seen gas this expensive (with exeptions) cheap things is an american way of life Ex. walmart, the dollar store, cheap gas, cheap land, rip off brands from mexico, imports from china......... you get the picture

And thats called being spoiled, guess what your now joining the rest of the world having to deal with this problem, all the complaining in the world wont help, your all just going to have to face facts that its not going to be the cheap world forever. It was bound to happen anyway with non-renewable products.

@all living in the US complaining about prices: be happy with mr Snow at the finance department... if you had mr Zalm, you would have really suffered.

In Holland there is a base price level that differs a few cents from company to company (this is the money paid for processing, transportation and stuff with a profit margain added. the last one gives the small price differences). Over that base price, there is a load of environmental and other taxes and the infamous 'kwartje van Kok' (which was introduced in the 90's to patch up some budgetary deficits).
That gives the consumer level price, and over that price you have 20% VAT (double catch for the hague... demanding VAT over your own taxes)

With all that you have a fuel price of about 1,50 euros....

That's a little more than it is in Germany. The main difference is that in Germany the road use tax is included in the fuel price (drive more -> pay more), while in holland that is a separate tax which is not in any way connected to the amount of distance driven
