i heard that gas prices are going to jump big time tomorrow because of the potential damage to the oil refineries..80% damage to New Orleans. This is that scenario that the emergency relief services prepare for, and dread.  :'(

It could be me, but I've never seen the Americans more nervous about hurricanes than over this one. Seems to be particullary nasty if they evacuate entire cities like New Orleans! I hope things work out fine for our members in that area!

New Orleans is a city built on soggy landfill..... and in places is below sea level.  Flooding is a problem when it just rains.  It is also a city of historical shaky OLD wooden buildings.  And it is generally a "historical preserve" of a lot of early American cultural stuff....has a lot of colorful history associated with it.

A hurricane like this will absolutely POUND that place.

Thanks Jbaymore, but i was already aware of that. They showed a simulation of what could happen during the newscast last night. Looks awfull. I for one never understoof why people started settlements at a place under that waterlevel. That's just asking for trouble.

You see this in belgium too. New areas are built in former natural flood-areas ( meadows etc.). When nature strikes, they get flooded again. Yet the elder population knows these dangerous places...

New Orleans is a very old city (founded 1718); Europeans first settled there because it's pretty much the last bit of perenially dry land before the Mississippi River runs into the sea. Despite the risks, it's been a very good place to be if one's business has anything to do with shipping on that tremendously important river (starting with actually deciding who gets access and who doesn't!).
 And this level of weather havoc is very unusual for the area- New Orleans gets a little pounding every season, but is very rarely hit dead-on by such a large hurricane. They're pretty well-prepared, although this time, yes, the storm surge could leave all but the highest parts of town in a sorry state.

Just heard the path of the storm now changed slightly, so it would just miss the citycenter... But I guess that's just bad news for another area!
