Has anybody seen the movie call the Great Raid. Is it any good ?

I'm going to see it.  I've seen the History Channel and Oliver North War Stories documentries about it.  Looking forward to seeing it.

Wind Talkers
Tora Tora Tora
Battle of Britain
Saving Private Ryan
Tuskeege Airmen - lots of hollywood liberties taken, but still good
Pearl Harbor - ONLY for the action scenes
Big Red One
The Longest Day
Midway - the version that includes Coral Sea - very rare
The Pianist - don't prejudge, this is an excellent movie
Zero - Japanese movie, hard to find but excellent
From Hell to Back
Guadalcanal Diary

There's plenty other movies, but of those I've seen, these are the ones I could watch over and over.


Biggest dissapointment:

I saw it...

...except for the fact that they showed dantlesses bombing pearl, it could be a documentary

The acting wasn't too great, but the special effects made up for it.

And I believe it truely tells the story about the heroism of the men inside the camp, the Phillipino underground, and the soldiers who busted them out

I am so fed up with seeing various documentaries that show those Dauntlesses when they show Pearl Harbor footage.  Those Dauntlesses were used for a war-time documentrary on the Pearl Harbor attack.  But you still see that shot over and over.

Not sure it's been released here but reviews I've read vary from excellent to a complete waste of time. The only way to judge is to watch it yourself & come to your own conclusion. Feature films are aimed at the general public. This is not a film about aircraft or Pearl Harbor & I imagine those shots are used to set the scene. The average punter & a great many members of this forum would have no idea what a Dauntless looks like even if they were standing next to one. Not likely Craig. I can't remember the last time I went to the cinema - or watched a film on TV for that matter. I would much rather read the book.

I have no room to criticise as I felt just the same as Brandon when I was younger. I even wrote an essay on the subject at school. Now I realise the difficulties & expense involved in absolute authenticity I'm a little more tolerant. Genuine newsreel footage can be very effective in some cases & the average person would never notice anyway. I'm convinced that footage of a German fighter crashing inverted in the English Channel commonly used in BoB documentaries is actually a Spitfire.

Have you ever wondered why there's so little genuine footage of the Normandy landings in 1944? Apparently the ship carrying all the newsreel film was sunk on the way back to England.

Dauntlesses attacking Pearl? I already don't like the movie and I haven't even seen it.

I think that documentary was done by John Ford during the war.  Obviously, the US didn't have a few Val's laying around so they put the Japanese logo on the fusalague and took shots of Dauntlesses *at high altitude* entering a dive.  You see clouds in the background, so you know they're way up there.

Oh yea, in Saving Private Ryan, at the end a P51 comes in low and spoils things for the Germans, and a guy says those are P51 tank busters.....  uh, yea...  ::)

Not a bad film but again I think the books on the subject are far better.

I didn't list my choices as I've done this many times before. I rarely watch films now as I had more than my share when I was younger. I've seen most of the films made about WWII up to a certain date several times over. Some of the older British films are in B&W but well-made & generally more historically accurate than the usual Hollywood product. Unfortunately they wouldn't appeal to the younger generation due the lack of special effects. I still think Das Boot is probably the best film ever made about WWII but again the book is better.

As most of you, when watching WWII documentaries, we've all seen the same footage over and over for many years.  I began catching WWII documentaries on the Military channel, and I found myself saying over and over "I've never seen that footage before!"

Maybe they got into a previous unreleased archive, I don't know. but I've been seeing quite a bit of footage I've never seen before, and I've been watching WWII documentaries for decades.
