I'd just like to point out that I'm not getting at TacitBlue. His question was perfectly valid & I was simply using it as an example.

Thousands of people have died fighting for the freedom we cherish as a right. Allowing censorship in any form (except voluntary) makes their sacrifice pointless. Yes, some people will abuse that right & always will. I might passionately disagree with what they have to say but I will defend their right to say it. I much prefer what we have now to the alternative. This is one of the problems with a free society as people who wish to destroy it use our freedom against us.

PS. If the mods think this in in any way political please delete it.

Doug - no problem.  I allow you to speak my mind... :)

I understand what you're saying Doug, and I agree- I don't like censorship either. It just occured to me that a discussion on UN policies was a political discussion, and what with the recent outcry around here about such things, I felt someone needed to point it out. But, if the mods don't think there is anything wrong here (after all one of them started the thread) then its fine by me.

Back on topic- Censoring the internet is next to impossible, unless its done by the individual users. Like if you put a "net-nanny" type program on your computer. Censoring it as a whole would never work, we can't even stop international spam. Even if it could work, it's a bad idea- if they censor the internet, whats next?

What is Icann?

if your question wasnt answered:

Icann is the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers. They contol the internet.

www.icann.org

they are now responsible for controlling the net after the IANA (Internet assigned numbers authority, based in the U.S.) switched over to them.
Icann is about to release 2 new extensions, .mobi (for cell phones) and .xxx (for pornographic sites).
other companies who are also in control of a majorty of the internet are: ARIN (formerly IANA) INTERNIC, LANIC, APNIC, and RIPE NCC.

hope thats helps.

:)Ramos.

do a whois search on www.drumlineramos.com, (idk why, just thought i'd say that)  It shows my tech is Yahoo!. i switched  over to Site5, but my whois isnt updated yet. also all my personal info is there, which im kinda "eh..." about.

Well, they've dismally failed at their chief job, preventing global genocide, so I guess they might as well do the next best thing-control the internet :P

(this post wasn't political, let's not get me banned ;))

Some very valid points of view. Okay so anyone got any clever ideas on how to stop spam? My usual email service are hopeless, I'm down to about a mere 50-100 pieces a day (in several languages, anyone know how I got on a German spam list? The only things I've had to do with Germany are being based in W.Germany for 6 months (a loooooong time ago), and drinking a lot of their v.fine beer and schnapps).

Design a program that will allow you to return the spam to it's source of origin and totally fire the SOB's computer. Especially the porn spammers. I'm so sick and tired of them and viagra, cialis, pharmaceutical, own real full programs for free, how to steal passwords, etc.

The funny thing is that these morons want you to buy things from them and they use deception to get past spam filters.
