Dial-up versus Broadband...?

Here's a discussion point for you...!

Hello all..!

For the past 5 years or more, I have used the dial-up evenings and weekends service from Freeserve/Wanadoo for my Internet use.

For this service I pay British Telecom

fozzer, theres much better deals going than that. Whos it with? My dad uses tesco, thats quite a good deal.. I am using telewest unlimited, i am not 100% sure of the cost but its not too bad.

one thing though now that you have fs9 you might find fun in flying on the internet with some of us....in that case dsl is a must......

The deal of 18 quid a month for 1 gig is ridiculous me thinks! Must be a better deal somewhere....2 hours a day :-/

I was gonna say that too. When I started on Broadband I was on 512K, 2GB limit with wanadoo. The thing I liked was that the modem worked on an almost dial up method, so it didn't have to be on 24/7. It has been perfectly adequate. Having said that, i've just gone wireless with wanadoo, so have paid an extra

For this, I am permanantly connected to the Internet.

I am restricted to 2 hours internet use each day, 1 Gb per month of usage, which allows me to send and receive 60 jpeg pictures by E-Mail each week, download 2 X 5 minute video clips per week, download 5 music tracks per week, and listen to on-line radio for 2 hours each week.

I don't understand this part, as these sentences are contradictory.  If you are permanently connected to the internet you are using it 24 hours a day, unelss you turn off your modem.  It only makes sense if the second sentence means that you get 60 hours a month standby dialup service.  The standby service allows you to, for example, take your laptop computer to another location and access dialup service from there.  I rarely use more than an hour of it per month.

That's one of the things that puts me off loosing my existing Freeserve dial-up package... ....!

You might want to look into the one in my link. They give you a 30 day trial, that way if you dont like it after a month you can cancel and go back to your old system. Ok its

Wanadoo have been ok. I've been charged twice - once to move house (effectively a new connection, so and engineering fee to BT I suppose), and the other to upgrade to a faster package. To downgrade or increase the usage allowance is free (exept the icrease in monthly subscription))

Using Broadband my computer is permanantly connected to the "telephone line" but restricts me to a certain amount of Internet usage per week, over that limit and I get warned....just for the start...!

Dial-up between the hours quoted above is unlimited.

The difference between the two....
Broadband means permanant connection, Internet + telephone calls incoming and out going.
Dial-up means no incoming/outgoing telephone calls whilst on the 'Net.*

I checked your link and you are correct.  Apparently broadband, like so many other words, means different things in America and England.

In the US it means 24/7 unlimited usage.  Your 24/7 plan would cost about twice what mine costs.

(This "BT" thing isn't owned by the government, is it?)

Dial-up Internet via Freeserve for a 3 month period.....

524 connections to the Internet...(remember 2-hour cut-offs).
Total: 567 hours, 17 minutes, 28 seconds for three Months....FREE, FREE, FREE*...!
