The KKK was thousands strong in the early part of the 1900's (I'm just stating history and not politics mods...)  A film called Birth Of A Nation was made glorifying them.  It was even endorsed by then-president Woodrow Wilson:

"It's like writing history with lightning. And my only regret is that it is all terribly true."

I do believe it more accurate to say that they rival the Nazis.    African Americans were lynched (murdered) and it was legal!!!  

Mississippi Burning was far from accurate (the real story is much worse as the FBI acually got the names from thousands of dollars in bribes, and the trial was a joke).  They weren't even charged with murder as it would have been impossible to get a white jury to convict them.  Rather they were charged with depriving the victims of their civil rights.  More on this here

And sadly, racism is deeply rooted here in America...even to this day.

As for the subject of this thread...

I too am glad to see this scum get brought to justice.  Making the punishment fit the crime?  Put him in a nursing home and all his caregivers should be African (and not forced to provide the best of care either).

Lynchings are way down, but systemic (if not official) racism is alive and well in the USA, especially down South. It's reflected by hiring practices,law enforcement statistics etc.; very subtle, but ask any African-American about it, and you'll hear a personal story of being marginalized or worse. But back in the day, it was apartheid with a vengeance...  Ironically, though, you'll also find the most "color-blind" people down there, on both sides of the tracks. As for this guy, I still haven't figured out how the statute of limitations applies, but it's a worthwhile example to be made. It's galling to think he and others like him have been walking around free as birds!
As for the Klan, they're largely a joke nowadays... they held a "rally" in New York (that's right- New York!!) a while back, and it was just half a dozen hooded jackasses with a small crowd laughing at them.
But one still has to worry about the segement of such groups that's taken off their hoods and gone "legit"... the struggle continues.

Well here in Michigan they held a rally in Lansing at the state Capitol...

The city had to use so much police to keep order that the Mayor refused to allow them to hold a rally there the next year...

They went to court over it (and lost...thank God).

Apartheid, the only Dutch word we are not proud of. This case only got some small media attention here in Holland, which I think is no good. Racism here is slowly but steadily growing (in my opinion). Not only against black people but more and more against Arab/Muslim. Why can't we all live together? It's not that hard. I know it isn't.

That is because people are fed up with the EU. Over here the BNP and such like are gaining power and every election they win more votes. It is quite alarming and to think not even 100 years has passed from two World Wars. I would vote anti EU but woyuld never go near anything racist like the BNP. It is a pity people are so ignorant as you say.

Actually that's not true. Only in european elections do UKIP and the BNP get any number of votes at all. In our general elections they get hardly anything worth mentioning.
