OK Mod response,  ;D
First off Saitek, thank you for posting your concerns as it is important for all of us who are part of this community to feel comfortable when coming here.
Here is somewhat of an explanation.

Being a Mod is somewhat,... well tough. You need to be neutral, you need to know how to handle "international" communication and you need to try to please everybody. Yes, there is a "no religion - politics" rule enforced here and yes, sometimes through the global typing of virtual communication, some posts do get "over-looked". Nobody here has free reign to post and nobody here gets "special treatment" when it comes to subject matter.

I myself am a Christian who believes in God but I do not say much about it. I do see the growing number of posts about anti this & anti that. Trying to balance the forums is a hard thing. We as mods have discussed this in the past. There are half that say we slap a lock on too quick and where is our freedom of speech, and there is the other half that says, "where are the mods, this needs to be locked."

Since so many have voiced their opinion on this, we have discussed it down in the basement and there really is no choice left.

ZERO TOLERANCE IN REGARDS TO RELIGION & POLITICS!

Please, we are not on the hunt or anything, we ware just going to try to "enforce" the rule better on our part. If a thread has anything to do with religion or politics, it will be locked!

Now you need to realize something. We can not monitor this place 24/7. Even though Pete has tried to cover all time zones, sometimes we are living our lives outside SimV.

Please still go about posting as you would but please remember, if a thread starts to go South or if a thread smells of a problem, it will be locked.

This is not about Mods and power, it is about making sure that the community we have built here, stays here and is comfortable with the forums.

With that, if any member sees something that makes them uncomfortable or if he/she finds offensive, please PM a Mod so we can deal with it immediately. You too are the eyes and ears of this place and any help is always appreciated!

Like I mentioned, the rules are not changing so don't think that we are clamping down, all we are saying is that watch what you say when speaking about the two above topics. If there is any NEGATIVE or any SARCASM, it will be locked. There are a few who constantly try to "push their limit" and if it keeps up, you will warned.  :P

Once again thank you for voicing your concerns and we as Mods of this circus will try to do our best to make sure that the "No Religion - No Politics" rule is enforced.

Thank You for your understanding.

What a great way to start off my Saturday morning.  8)

nope, I haven't. but still... it is quite offensive to my religion... I'm not trying to make enemies... and I was planning on keepin' my mouth shut about it... but, I saw an oppurtinity rise.

You may have seen Scania's sig as offensive, but Father Ted has been showen repeatedly on British, Irish and American TV for well over 10 years which shows how many are offended by it even in strongly catholic countries like Ireland. :P

Part of the price of living in a free society  is that you have to put up with things you may be offended by or that you may not agree with.

(come on, was anything offensive said in the thread that started all this?)...

Not intill the potential religious connotations were brought up.

Ah yes, just spotted it... The rest of the thread was just arguing about the thread in relation to forum rules! :)

I'm kind of disappointed at how this has turned out...

Now I'm no saint when it comes to staying away from taboo subjects, though I try.  I remember starting a thread that was meant to ask one thing and it sort of turned into a debate about Terry Schaivo...

I admit, I was naive to think it wouldn't go in that direction, but never did it turn into insults or flaming as we were afraid it might.

There have been other threads that touch the taboo, but that did not turn into flame wars either...

I haven't checked this part of the forums in awhile...maybe I should have stayed away.  It looks to be getting a bit more boring in here...

Yeah, true enough Woodlouse...One more point

It did show that members are capable of keeping taboo subjects from turning into flame wars...hence why it didn't get locked...

In fact, I only remember one or two real flame wars, and they were over something really stupid (one was over scenery).

sigh

No body's perfect when it comes to starting threads like that. Everyone has done it at least once and as long as everyone is grown up enough to either respect or ignore other peoples opinions then there'll be no problems. It's when people start disagreeing that the arguments start and threads get locked.

Thus The Mod problem.......

When is the right time to lock it?
Do I do it now? It isn't real bad and people are being civil.

Now it is time for me to leave my office & go home to diner, My kids and all is calm now in my house, time to log back in,.. 3 hours later. Leave work & log back in,.. now there are a different group of people due to time zones and the entire thread is heated and flaming no less than 3 hours from when I left it and I was the only Mod logged.
This is what happens.

I think that is the real reason is this...
Zero Tolerance = nobody offended = Happy SimV Forum!  ;D

Thanks for the replies all. (Well some of you anyway :P)
I just want to point out that there IS a difference between talking about contraversial issues and politics and religeon (though there may be connections). If people say neutral things or things that are unbiased/unoffensive I, to be honest, don't mind if they are political or religous.
It is just that nearly every post that contains it is biased, anti-a-belief and very often offensive.

I notice much in particular that politic posts are generally stamped on very quickly, downright religous ones are too. BUT POSTS INSIDE INNOCENT THREADS ARE NOT and are left as obiter dicta by people that think such statements are allowed on innocent threads. These posts are left and are equally offensive and I'd appreciate more inner-cleansing in the forums.

I appreciate your hard work Dave and that of all the mods as I know it is a tough job. Just raising some points that need addressing. ;)

Basically we don't have hard & fast rules ....

Politics & Religion are strongly discouraged but not banned. I have said this 100 times ........

People will think one way or another about these subjects & as others have said - passions get high & things get taken too seriously.

We are no more tollerant of anti religion any more than pro religion.  Left or right. People have a right to think the way they think - but discussing these opinions here is not the right place.

If you don't happen to believe in a God - don't assume you know everything & tell those who do they are wrong. & visa versa.

As jordonj said above - the VAST MAJORITY of posts on these forums have & continue to be friendly & poitive - far more than 99% - & this is without hard & fast rules.

We don't have these rules because we trust our members to act respectfully. & Generally it works.

What is wrong, in my opinion,  is not respecting the opinion of others.

That's when things go wrong but generally people know what not to talk about & how NOT to provoke people!  ;)

ZERO TOLERANCE IN REGARDS TO RELIGION & POLITICS!

Great, I can't talk about "Father Ted" then?
Thats the trouble with Religion & Politics, by definition, our lives are full of their influences and, effects. - We all support some sort of God or other, we are all govorned to a greater or lesser extent.

If somebody could clearly highlight the point where the line should not be crossed, I'd be all to eager to stick to that line.
Trouble is, how do you define it?
