Maybe if he'd been even vaguely Arabic in name or appearance, they might've stopped him... although I'm amazed the French name didn't arouse suspicion.
I feel so secure knowing these guys are on watch, lemme tell you...

Man, he is just creepy looking. It dosn't sound like they had any reason to stop him from entering the US though. They couldnt prove that it was blood on the saw, and he wasn't wanted at the time.

Are you sure there was no warrant yet? If not, a check wouldn't have given them due cause. However, it seems no sort of check was made, despite the cache of weapons and the fact that he is in fact creepy-looking and I can well imagine he was acting weird. He really looks psychopathic- someone could develop a really messed-up computer game around this dude. Glad they caught him...

Say what? 20 to 30% of the names THIS side of the Canadian/New England border are French. The name "Vermont" is French (=Green Mountain), as well as numerous towns across the U.S.
The upset is that... "On the same day Despres crossed the border, he was due in a Canadian court to be sentenced on charges he assaulted and threatened to kill Fulton's son-in-law, Frederick Mowat, last August..."(refer to linked article). ::)During the time he was detained, something should have been in put effect; at the very least, an escort to his court appearance. >:(

Anyone with hair like that should be locked up regardless of what they've done. :P

Isn't everyone from Canada either a lumberjack or a hockey player?

I was just  taking a poke at the current  (idiotic)American trend of despising all things French (remember "Freedom Fries"?) , as well as the always-simmering anti-Arab sentiment. Not very funny, I guess, and now that I think about it, there's nothing funny about this bizarre specimen or the fact that  he was not detained at least until his record could be checked... :P
