Mother cooks baby boy over gas flame...

Postby Saitek » Wed Jun 08, 2005 4:00 pm

And this is what was said about her:

A woman who killed her three-week-old baby by burning him on a cooker top has been sentenced to round-the-clock supervision in a care home.

Sentencing Green on Wednesday, Judge Moss said: "This is not a case for punishment. The facts of this case are distressing and tragic.

David Fisher, QC, defending, said: "These were not the calculating actions of an evil woman but the random actions of a woman with a severe mental disorder."

Say what you like, this is going too far. I am angry with the stupid society I live in that calls this justice.  >:(

Actually we have a case Similar to this in Holland....A little Girl was found dead in a car..Her sister was systematically mistreated..The demands of our Justice department are 2 and 3 years!!! They have already been in 8 moonths of pre-arrest and with dutch law as it is they could be set free at the end of THIS year!!! Ridiculous!!! Some mental treatment is also demanded so I hope that will keep them imprisoned for the rest of their miserable lives!!

Sometimes the justice departments seem so unfair!

until you have been diagnosed as mentally ill or have had serious dealings with someone as sick as this woman dont make judgement on her punishment. She needs big time pyschiatric help before anything else thats for certain.

I'm sorry I can't care a speck what her condition is. Such people should be, in my opinion, etc etc and if not locked up for life - total life and never be allowed ever to to be in society again.

I think this says more about the treatment of mentally ill people "in the community" than the legal system. The judge obviously agreed with the defence that this unfortunate woman was suffering from a severe mental disorder. It's a known fact that mentally ill people fail to take their medication or keep appointments. This system obviously doesn't work. A friend of mine with a lifetime's experience of dealing with mental illness told me this when they first suggested it some years ago. She has been proven right many times over but how many more times does this need to happen before the powers-that-be accept that they got it wrong? That's what makes me angry.

It's not wise to make such judgments from a single news story even if it is the BBC. Anyone who would do a thing like that is clearly out of their mind and needs help because fortunately we've moved on from the time when anyone with a mental disorder was simply locked away.

I haven't! :o ;)
My Dad is studying pyscology and basically the mindset is people who commit crime in society have a mental problem. In the worst case it is like this woman and some pyscologists will say that your ordinary thug is just a milder version. Society blames much of the evil deeds by people today to nobody (!!) and excuses people on the mental illness idea.

To be honest I think many people have allowed themselves to get to the state they are (not all) by the way they are. I think some people are so evil that they don't need much to turn hardened and sour so that they loose all to any reality. They go mental and in the majority of cases at that level they are irriversible.
There are a lot of questions about mental illness and I haven't made up my mind what I think.

However, I am convinced that if someone murders one of my family either:
1) Deliberately with intent
2) Out of the ordinary when in a fit of anger
3) When, without knowledge, due to the influence of drink/drugs they do the unthinkable.
4) Because of mental illness, (which has a huge range of scales and many anomalies and unanswerable questions).

In my opinion they all deserve the same sentence as the same crime has been committed.
Yes indeed I am contraversial and extreme! :o

Not controversial. More dated. As I said, we've moved on from the time when the mentally disabled were merely locked away "out of sight, out of mind" and now we're trying to find out how they think and how a similar incident can be prevented in the future.

And as for the idea that anyone who commits a crime has a mental disorder, that is the biggest load of bollocks I've ever heard. :P

There are some experts, though few, who don't even believe in mental illness at all. Not sure I'd agree, but too much blame is attatched to the mystical "Mr Nobody" these days and no-one is responsible for anything anymore.

And as for the idea that anyone who commits a crime has a mental disorder, that is the biggest load of bollocks I've ever heard. :P

Yes, science is moving that way Woody. Few people commit crimes therefore that = that those few people are abnormal. That means they have something "up" with them. Studies will then show this and research will show that. Then a theory appears to prove this idea and so on. I'm afraid that is where science is going. In 100 years time people will say your ideas are all dated and weird. ;)

Ben. I hope you never enter the legal profession. :o

The report you linked to states that this woman suffered from a long-term mental illness.
The court heard Green suffered from a long-term psychiatric illness and doctors said she had not recovered fully from the birth of the baby.

She had seen a number of social workers and medical workers in the days before Mickle's death but had failed to keep appointments or take medication.

As I said earlier, it's a known fact that people suffering from these disorders very often don't take their medication & or keep appointments without supervision yet they seem surprised that this is exactly what happened. Not only that but they allowed her to look after a young baby while in this condition.

No - I am doing law, but couldn't endure doing it at uni level. My sis has pretty much the same views to me and she hopes to! :o

So your saying that those with a mental illness will commit a crime ben? Or thats how its sounding. I know a couple of people with serious mental illness that have never commited a crime. You must understand that there is such a thing. i dont want to go into too many details for personal reasons but i have been told i need to get checked out for something that could be considered a mental health problem. i'm not gonna torch someone though.
But that being said yes too many people blame mental health for their crimes and use it as an excuse to get off of the charges. But in this case the woman was diagnosed long before the crime was commited and i feel it had alot to do with the terrible incident. Dont believe everything you hear from a student pyshcologists textbook. These theories and teachings are usually based off work done hundreds of years ago. They still teach alot of freuds stuff as fact when most of it has been discounted.

no no I wasn't saying that at all Craig. I just feel that whatever an excuse might be a crime is a crime and such people should be kept from society. Would you want her as your neighbour?

ok just wanted to clear that one up.
I will agree she needs to be kept away from society, but not to be locked up. She needs professional help in a specialised hospital with experts who can at very least learn from this woman stuff that could prevent it happening again with another.
