Who's got a ticket..............

Postby commoner » Wed Apr 27, 2005 7:58 am

Hi all....it's here at last......well it will be from tomorrow. The new Doncaster airport starts flights to holiday destinations in Europe as a start to becoming (hopefully) a true International Airport. With it's almost 9000 ft runway and great passenger potential who can deny that it will succeed...........Well, I for one wish it all the very best!

........don't know if any of you guys will be amongst the first flight, I am taking a short five day break in Jersey next week and feel so excited to be flying on the 07.45 flight from "donny" on Monday..........what a change to contemplate the 20 minute taxi ride instead of the dreadful M62 to Manchester or Liverpool or even worse the mad M1 run to Luton, which on one occasion took me seven hours because of a road accident........Ugh!

I'll have more to say when I get back and a few pics too................commoner ;)

Yeah, I use a variation of that line on my brother whenever he goes on holiday:

"Have a good holiday Andy - break ya nose".  ;D

I just realised that this is the new Robin Hood Airport. I don't know which bright spark thought that was a suitable name for an international airport in Yorkshire. A tad confusing for me, never mind foreign visitors expecting to see Nottingham & Sherwood Forest. ::)

Why is the airport called Robin Hood Airport?

It is designed to make greater use of world-famous characters from our rich history to promote the area to international travellers and businesses. For example other world airports use names associated with their history, for example Ronald Reagan (Washington), Charles de Gaulle (Paris), John F Kennedy (New York) and Leonardo da Vinci (Rome).

...I mean EVERYBODY knows Robin Hood was a Yorkshire lad from Donny................commoner ::) ;D

...mmmm.....well I made it ...and got back OK BUT NOT without incident I can say.

..........arrived at "Robin Hood" two hours before scheduled take off time to find "our" plane already at the gate and getting the treatment ready for the trip..

GREAT you might think...........NOT GREAT, as a quick check of the departures board informed me that a one hour delay was already on the board........UGH!

Still that gave plenty of time to suss the place out and I felt it was pretty good  for starters and lots of room to grow.

Time to board at last....GREAT....taxi to the active and a sweet takeoff..........Jersey here we come.....

...mmm....suspect we are not climbing as one should for a 737 but at least we are airborne.....

NOT for long.....captain says "sorry lads we are off back to Donny".............land  25 minutes later to be met by the firefighters et al and as a quick look revealed the undercarriage needed major repairs we had to get our asses off the damned thing...............

.......to cut a long story short the powers that be nicked a plane from under the noses of passengers bound for Prague and we were quickly boarded before they could get their vengeful little hands on us........phew.

Three hours delay plus two hours we were at the airport early plus an hour and ten minutes flight time, all added up to a jolly spiffing time...............

........I HATE FLYING............commoner. ;D

...managed to catch sight of the airfied after the second take off which was a little bonus............... ;)

Hi Hagar...nice to be back.....mmm...that must be the first shot I ever managed of the airport I was heading for..............It is just a holiday Airline, Tomsonfly. They are the ones to get this new Airport "off the ground" as you might say......we thought it a good idea to give them some custom.....commoner ;)

......Don't like these guys around when I land.....bad for my blood pressure.  ;D

Looks like an RAF Base to me!!! Prefer it if it still had Dominies and Jetreams etc wizzing round. ;)  Anyway, can't complain - they could have turned it into a housing estate....
