I believe they are refering to other songs that are played on the radio which have much more offensive lyrics.

Would they prefer-
"louis louis
I must go
Louis louis
I must go

A nice female is at home doing homework
I like to go boating
I like to sail alone
I dont want to go home, just kidding, I like my family

Louis louis
I must go

I sailed for 3 days and 3 nights
I think of the female at home doing homework
I think of her on my boat
Roses smell pretty

louis louis
I must go

I see Jamaca, a small island state in the caribean sea
I will be there soon, but I wont use illegle substances there
I hugged the female at home doing homework
And I tell her I will stay at home with her to help her with homework

Louis, louis
I must go"

Would that be better to play in the parade?  I hate all these PC conservative "CENSORED".  Oh "CENSORED"!  That "CENSORED" FCC has gotten into Simv!  I hate "THOSE FRIENDLY PEOPLE AT THE FCC".  The "CENSORED" people at "THE FRIENDLY FCC" ruin "NOTHING AT ALL, NOW GO HOME AND WATCH OUR PROPOGANDA, I MEAN TELETUBBIES!"

I can only assume there was a lot more fuss over this record in the US than in the UK.

I hate all these PC conservative "CENSORED".

Interestingly enough, it was a liberal by the name of Tipper Gore who first brought the issue of obscenity into the spotlight.

It has nothing to do with politics.  It has everything to do with decency.  There's just no NEED for the language, honestly.  Using language like that says far more about the one using it than it ever could about someone who is offended by it.

I think we're getting our wires crossed here. I'm talking about the subject of this topic & the fact that people are complaining about a school marching band playing an instrumental version of the song Louie Louie. I repeat, the hit record never had offensive lyrics which the FBI apparently confirmed after a 30 month investigation at the time it was first released. I wouldn't mind betting that those complaining never listened to the record or if they did never understood the words. If you look for something hard enough you invariably find it whether it exists or not. The whole thing is ridiculous.

Most of the old classic records were simply love songs with no hidden meanings apart from the usual references to sex. They were intended for dancing to & the words were secondary to the rhythm & overall sound. With the amplification of the time it was often impossible to make out the words anyway. If you wish to complain about something complain about the really offensive content of many modern "pop" records.

PS. I think this was Kevin's whole point in posting this topic.

Exactly.  I will mention though that a lot of the late sixties, early seventies rock WAS about pushing boundries and slipping in references to drugs, sex, etc...

Taking for instance, The Rasberries 'Go all the Way', the author has stated categorically, that he was trying to make a song about 2 kids having sex for the first time, but the attitudes at the time wouldn't allow it, so he couched it more subtle terms.

I could understand (not agree) with them banning this song.  But their reaction is one of lingering paranoia, not of legitimate concern.
