Your Views: Abortion

Postby Saitek » Thu May 05, 2005 12:37 pm

Another contraversial topic and I am sure we can all keep friendly and can all speak without flaming. PLease keep all politics and religeon free from this topic as much as possible! ;D Please don't lock it mods either. We have debated ever so nicely before! :)

To start off I will say that I am against it unless the mother's life is in danger such as ectopic pregnancies and perhaps rape. I am sure we all agree that the it is better to save the mother rather than to let both mother and baby die whatever our opinions are.

To get things going I'll put forwards view from both sides.

Against.

1) We all have human rights. A baby has the right to live wether it is in the womb or out of the womb. calling it a feteus does not take away it's rights.

The EU Human Rights Act 1998  states:
Article 3.
Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person.

2) A feteus very soon shows signs of more than just life as a cell and is responsive to stimulus.  It is comparable to killing a baby to an adult as killing a feutus to a newborn baby. One is only more advanced than another.

3) It is offensive to people to post pictures of aborted feteuses. However, this is not counted as murder and the baby has not single human right and deemed the property of the mother therefore does it not make sense to say that the conscience is pricked telling one that this is downright murder?

4) Many abortions are regretted at a later date. They are often traumatic and are heavily linked with depression and such problems.

5) What is the difference in aborting a baby at 20 weeks or 24? Or aborting it at 40 or killing it after is born. They are one and the same and it is still the same person at whatever stage with human rights.

For.

1) A woman's body - she can do what she likes. While the fetus is in her it is her right as she is the maker and owns its rights.

2) A fetus is not much more in the early stages than a bunch of cells and  cannot understand what is going on. Even in the later stages it may not be developed enough to understand. Therefore the mother can make decisions in her best interests.

3) Helps keep world numbers down, help family planning and prevent poverty.

4) Human rights comes with birth and not before. (though I believe this article doesn't mean that).

Article 1.
All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.

Now I know this very debatable in the US.

Over here in Britain the opposition pledged to challenge the cut off point of 26 (or is it 24?) weeks and knock it down to 20. The reason was that babies could survive at that age and therfore it needed to be changed!
I thought to myself so you are admitting then that all babies aborted then shouldn't have been and if so what does that constitute as?!

It's up to the mother and the mother alone.

Well I'm not ;D

First of all I live in Holland a kinda Progressive country and a bit to progressive for some.
Abortion is tolerated in here.

I think there should always be an option for abortion.

If medical tests show that a feteus has significant shortcomings ( And I don't mean a missing finger or so) That a "normal" cannot be guaranteed I think the parents should have the option to abort. This is the case if there are organs missing or severly undergrown and such. Also there is the matter of Raping. What if a girl gets Raped? Should she be obliged to give birth to that child? I think not! there is of course always the adoption method but I do not think it is fair for her to be obliged to give birth. There are also the "Accidents" and that one is a difficult one. However is it fair for a child to let it be unwanted? Of course people will say that parents will love it. but what if that is not the case?

My opinions may be a bit too harsh for some of you. Don't even bother to let me reconsider as i've already had many debates on this one ;D

Is Hyperion2 the same as Hyperion(Scottler)?

I'm going to say that I DON'T agree with abortion but I don't want to get into it heavily.

Sorry Ben. I'm keeping my big mouth shut except to say that I have no strong feelings on this subject.
