I quit after I went out for a quiet drink with a mate, I had 2 pints & 15 (Superking Black) fags - thought it was turning into a bit of a 'vice' so I had to knock 'em on the head.

Although I'll still argue against all this 'no smoking in public' rubbish - whats worse in the street? - someone's undetectable fag smoke or the contents of the exhaust from that bl**dy great bus that just pulled away in front of you?

Cheers,

TSC.

no smoking in public is utter bull SH**. The only second hand you could get is if you stood with nose OVER the cigarette. I suppose these idiots would do that to push their agendas though...

The whole smoking in public thing doesn't stop you from having a fag in the street. Just in restaurants, pubs, shops, buses etc. :P

I believe that smoking in the street is illegal in Los Angeles, NYC & some European cities/towns. If you've ever been to LA you will understand just how ridiculous this is. Brighton is likely to be the first city in the UK to follow suit.

That's fair enough but they seem to want it both ways. If they really want people to stop smoking the answer is quite simple. Why not simply make it illegal to sell, purchase or smoke tobacco? ::)

Because, they have a hard enough time keeping drugs off the streets, this would just add another much more widely used drug to the mix. I dont think any police department is prepared to deal with that.

A scandanavian that doesn't drink? What next, a welshman that doesn't find sheep attractive? :o

And as for making smoking completely illegal in one step, well, it's too big a step. So they're doing it in little steps. After all, smoking has been in europe for 400 years and you cannot stop it like turning out a light. Even so, I shouldn't be suprised if it was made completely illegal within the next century.

In the meantime they're making the same police departments responsible for enforcing anti-smoking laws. Although I've been smoking regularly since I was about 11 years old I wish I'd never started. Take it from me it's a mugs game. My only excuse is that things were very different when I started & it was an acceptable thing to do. I would willingly pack it in now but object to being treated as some sort of social outcast for legally purchasing cigarettes & daring to smoke the darned things. They're going about this the wrong way. I have a stubborn streak which makes me want to fight this hypocrisy.

Won't help. See Marijuana. Illegal, but there are hundreds of thousands of potheads in Europe.

The city of Berlin has taken a quite nice step. Possessing up to ten grams for personal use ain't illegal anymore. Saves the police some work and makes the hobby pothead happy. ;D

Also, there's proof that you're not only harming yourself when you smoke, but other people as well!

Many workplaces have banned smoking and New York no longer allows it in restaurants or bars.  Ironically, nursing home aides have to help residents smoke (interesting considering the hazards, but then it's just one more reason that being a nurse aide is one of the more dangerous jobs here in the US)...

Now there's a complicated issue!

From what I understand, Tobacco is a large part of the economy (not quite as big as oil...but still pretty big).  Remember that the compaines have been artifically increasing the addictiveness of cigarette tobacco since the late 60's while their advertising was aimed at young kids (more addicted kids meant higher profits).  And consider that Social Security relies on many potential beneficiares dying from illnesses brought on by smoking (talk about being in bed with the devil!)

I dunno if smoking has declined (I hope it has), but now tobacco companies are looking towards the third world...
