Well, congratulations to Pope Benedict the Sixteenth or Joseph Ratzinger ! I didn't expect he would win, but because he was the Dean of the College of Cardinals, there was a possibility there. Personally, I wanted Cardinal Francis Arinze to win, he is a Nigerian catholic cardinal and I thought that having an african pope would encourage catholicism more and denounce racism. However, that didn't happen but maybe in the future, an African would be elected pope.
About the hitler youth issue, I don't think Ratzinger was in a position to choose. If you spoke out, you would be sent to the horrifying concentration camps or worse, shot. So I think logically, people would hesitantly join the disgusting and terrible group.
BTW, I am Roman Catholic but I am not biased on anyone's opinion.
