Florida Homicide

Postby Scottler » Wed Apr 20, 2005 7:37 am

Deputies say a Lauderdale-By-The-Sea (Florida) man shot and killed his ailing car last Friday.

Investigators said that John McGivney, 64, walked out of his home at Bougainvilla Isles Apartments last Friday with a .380 caliber, semi-automatic pistol. He walked across the parking lot and pumped five rounds into the hood of his 1994 Chrysler LeBaron LX. A tongue-in-cheek police report listed the LeBaron as "deceased."

The apartment manager, George Haberkorn, said he asked McGivney what he was doing. He said McGivney responded, "I'm putting my car out of its misery, George."

After getting a call that shots had been fired, Broward Sheriff's Office deputies rushed to the scene and set up a perimeter around the apartment complex. They ordered McGivney to come out of his apartment unarmed and with his hands up. He did, and was subsequently charged with a firearms violation.

McGivney bonded out of jail the next day.
The police report said, "except for the car, no injuries were reported."
Great edit, Bob.

Good use of Police time. No doubt a drugs deal or murder was taking place that they could have dealt with instead. ::)

Well in this case, Craig, they didn't know what they were responding to, other than a report of a discharged weapon.  I wouldn't blame them for responding like this to that...After all, the guy doesn't sound like he's all there.  lol  Not exactly the first person I'd want to have a pistol.  ;)

Oh i dont think it was wrong to go out to the call. Of course any firearms in public call needs to be treated like it is a life threatening situation.
But wasting time hauling the guy in and spending time writing a joke report?
I do see the funny side to it.
Its just you hear police and politicians say they are dealing with crime problems. I really dont think the general public cares if theres one less lebaron on the road:)

LOL, gotta laugh though. So many times Ive wanted to shoot my computer... I built a new one instead.

BTW, I thinks this counts as an "Autocide", not a homicide.  ;)

I'm just wondering if he'll be charged with vehicular manslaughter.

Too easy for his lawyer to get him off on the vehicular manslaughter charge...they just have to take the car to a good mechanic and have it repaired!

If his state has vehicular assault charges on the books he's done though. :)

Sounds like the police "might not all be there" either. Who is crazy more - the Police or the guy? ::)
Ok - fine if in Britain where that would merrit 5 years imprisonment for having a gun,  - but in the US?

At least they have a sense of humour. ;)

This idiot sounds like Basil Fawlty on steroids toting a gun. I find that more than a tad scary. :o

That guy (the car shooter) is a prime example of why you should have to pass a test to even buy a gun. I have 2, one bought in a private, but legal sale and the other given to me and I didnt even need a background check when I registered them. The state knows I have them, but they dont know if Im crazey, or prone to suicide, or just plain dumb.

Yes, the infamous scene with the tree branch. I believe it was an epidode involving ruined chicken, or something. LOL!!
It definitely is scary- I mean, sure, we all want to kill a car at some time in our lives, but somebody might've been hurt.
