People truely over estimate the size of a wave/swell...you don't measure a wave by its depth of water and height...it is from top of water (ocean) to top of the wave...now just imagine sitting in water with 70 feet of water coming at you....

Top of water to top of wave...is that somehow different than it's height?  lol
Great edit, Bob.

No, I was just telling everyone how you measure a wave...you would not believe the amount of people who assume a wave is from sand to the top of the wave

I think anyone unfortunate enough to be in a boat in the trough of that wave might think the way you measure the height of it is irrelevant. ::) ;)

Just heard the latest on the news. The weather guy explained how that happens. Basically, if I understood him right, all of the normal wave that are out there anyway happen to be moving in the right direction at the right time and combine to form one of these freak waves. There was also a water spout in the area at the time, but our weather guy said it probably didnt cause the wave.
