You beat me to it.

I saw a report the other day about a shortage even more distressing than oil: water.  There was all these poppycock alternatives, but I think mankind is going to have to face the music and accept the fact that the Earth can not support 6 billion plus humans.  A big war or a plague might be all that can save Earth, as I seriously doubt man will ever stop reproducing at such a ludicrous speed.  Especially when you see these couples with ten or more kids.  And then the government rewards parents who give birth to eight kids at once!  The Chinese had it right... :P

I also find these remarks about luxuries humourous.  People aren't going to willingly give up their toiletries?  Well, we'll see what mother Earth says. ::)

Already, wars are being fought over water.  Look in parts of the Middle East and Africa.

Here in Michigan, people in economically depressed areas (like Detroit) have lost grants that help them pay for water.  Their water gets shut of and Social Services takes their children, because without water, they don't have acceptable housing.

Pretty messed up when you consider that Michigan lies in the middle of the largest source of freshwater in the world.

i guess, that to pray that mankind will have a change of heart is about all that is left. maybe prayer is a more powerful force than we know. or maybe its too late for prayer. but on the brighter side, i'm sure that there are many people in this world who care, and are working towards a better world. all the power to them.........

Aids, just think about about it, in a sick sick sick way, it's the perfect plague. SEXUALY transmitted, NO CURE, LETHAL. Sexualy, it cuts down oon unprotected sex (Less child birth), and every one who get's it is going die (Forgive the bluntness). and mass amounts of people have it. and it spreads like wild fire. it's almost like genocide.

However distressing it might be, plague, famine & war has always been nature's way of keeping a balance. Human ingenuity enables us to fight against it but nature can always adapt. I read that malaria is spreading & the number of people dying from it is now more than it was 30 years ago. Malaria kills over a million people a year and is second only to tuberculosis in its impact on world health. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/medical_notes/120644.stm

Due to complacency & misuse of drugs (like anti-biotics) some diseases that were almost beaten are now once again becoming a threat, not to mention the new ones. The human race can be its own worse enemy.

Another interesting thing..some of you may have heard of Enron, yes.  They tried to make a profit with water.  The problem is that most people view water as a birthright.

To add to their foolishness, they had a lot of British employees and were working in Argentina.

26 ways of saving water. You might find some of these facts surprising. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/2945018.stm
=====================================

A dripping tap could waste as much as 90 litres a week.

Brushing your teeth with the tap running wastes almost 9 litres a minute. Rinse out from a tumbler instead.

Cool water kept in the fridge means you won't have to run the tap for ages to get a cold drink.

Don't use your washing machine until you've got a full load. The average wash needs about 95 litres. A full load uses less water than 2 half loads.

Every time you boil an egg save the cooled water for your houseplants. They'll benefit from the nutrients released from the shell.

Fit a water saving device in your cistern and save up to three litres a flush.

Grow your grass a little longer. It will stay greener than a close mown lawn and need less watering.

Hoeing stimulates the growth of plants, reduces water loss from the soil surface and removes weeds that take up valuable water and nutrients.

Installing a water meter can save you water and money by monitoring how much you use.

Just taking a five minute shower very day, instead of a bath, will use a third of the water, saving up to 400 litres a week.

Kettles should be filled with enough water for your needs but not to the brim. This will reduce your fuel bills too.

Lag your pipes to avoid bursts and leave your heating on a low setting while you are out in cold weather to prevent pipes freezing.

Mulch for moisture in the garden. Adding a layer of tree bark, compost, coconut husks or even newspaper keeps the sun off the soil and retains precious moisture.

No further watering is usually required for established trees and shrubs.

Once a week is all the watering your lawn needs even in the hottest weather. Over- watering can weaken your lawn by encouraging roots to seek the surface.

Purchasing a water butt will help you to collect rain water for use on the garden.

Question your local garden centre about the water requirements of different plants. Some thrive in drier conditions.

Replacing a toilet cistern can save water. Toilets manufactured after 1993 use less water per flush.

Sprinklers can be wasteful. It doesn't take long for a sprinkler to soak your lawn thoroughly. A sprinkler can use as much water in an hour as a family of four will use in a day!

Trigger nozzles can save water by using it only when needed. This can save up to 225 litres a week.

Use the dirty water when cleaning a fish tank on your houseplants. It's rich in nitrogen and phosphorus, which provides an excellent fertiliser.

Very 'water efficient' washing machines and dishwashers are now manufactured. Machines with 'A' ratings are the most economical.

You'll find that they save on energy too.

Water your garden at the coolest part of the day to reduce evaporation.

Xeriscape means 'to landscape for water conservation.' The idea is to use plants that require less water. You can also utilise objects for decorative effect such as rocks, bricks, benches and gravel.

You can use less water by turning the hot tap down, rather than the cold tap up, if you require cooler water.

I was going to mention this as well, but opted not to, as it's sometimes a sensitive subject.

I hate to break this to you all but water is one resource we're not going to run out of any time soon. 70% of the earths surface is water and all it needs to become drinkable is to be boiled and the steam condensed to remove the salt. You can dig a hole in the ground, put a cup in it and cover it with a plastic sheet and in the morning you will have a mug full of water in the middle of the desert and in asia the atmosphere can be up to 98% humid. Believe me, if we're not short on anything then that thing is water. :P

As for how many the earth can support, well, if you can live without the creature comforts you have come to expect in your airconditioned houses with your two cars, three tellies and a computer then the planet could feed up to 15 billion if it had to. Fortunately though it's reckoned that the population growth of the earth will peak at about 9 billion before going down again. Cause it's all cyclic. See?

So cheer up chaps! It's not all bad. ;D

P.s. Hagar, all of those "water saving tips" are merely "money saving tips" cause you have to pay for the water you use. Any water used in the house will eventually find it's way into a river, or the sea or fall as rain and so will always be there to use again. :P

I'm not trying to spread gloom & doom Woody. The fact is that there is a severe shortage of drinking water in some parts of the world. They're even talking about water shortages here & it's not even summer yet. ::)

Yes, drinking water can be distilled from seawater but this can be expensive. In places with the severest water shortages ordinary people simply couldn't afford it.

P.s. Hagar, all of those "water saving tips" are merely "money saving tips" cause you have to pay for the water you use. Any water used in the house will eventually find it's way into a river, or the sea or fall as rain and so will always be there to use again. :P

This only applies if you have a water meter like me. Before I had it fitted I could use as much water as I wished at no extra cost*, just like many of my neighbours still can. Those tips will all avoid thoughtless waste of drinking water. Saving money while doing so is a bonus. ;)

*PS. This encourages wastefulness. Most people will save money if at all possible so water meters might make them more careful & not waste so much. Treating seawater to make it drinkable on a large scale would also require extra enerrgy. Here we go again.

If I remember correctly, the (TV) program alleged that the aquifer used to water crops in America's breadbasket (which it deemed the entire world's breadbasket... dunno about that one...) will be used up by 2030.  Hardly a laughable situation.  While a rich country can do something about it, like pehaps great, big huge pipes from the oceans and treatment plants, I doubt much can be done for other poor, landlocked nations of the world.

I remember a George Carlin bit about the reason poverty is such a problem, is you can't make money off of it.  If companies could find a way to eradicate poverty and make a buck in the process, the whole world would be rich in a year. :P

Poor countries would have to rely on the richer for a solution, and we all know what track record we have with helping poor countries. :P
