Ozzy is now considering a Jaguar V-24 engine for his two seater Spit.  He's figured that a Spit should have 12 cyls per occupant.

Actually, a fellow, about the time Jaguar was going to come out with the V-12 in the E-type, cobbled up a straight 12 out of two straight sixes, and shoehorned it into a "stretched" E-type.

Bill Bonner at Shoreham converted a six-cylinder Jaguar engine for use in aircraft. I was given a tour of his small workshop when they were working on it. He designed a completely new crankcase for it which was manufactured from some sort of aluminium alloy & all machined by hand. He tested it in a Chipmunk which I often saw flying around here. It had a very distinctive sound. I don't know what happened to the aircraft or the engine & never knew whether it was certified by the CAA. I assume it wasn't as I haven't heard anything about it for years. I sometimes see Bill & will ask him at the next opportunity.

Hmmm... One must be a real engineer or thrusting very hard on his own capacities to re-arange a car-engine to be used in a plane and survive a flight with it! My deepest respect the guy did it...

RR Merlin in a coupe - It was featured in a "Road & Track" several (quite many) years ago.  If I recall correctly, late sixties/early seventies

The Swandean Garage used to be just up the road from here. Not sure if it's there now. My Dad used to take me to see the Spitfire on the forecourt.

Swandean Spitfire Special

In regards to a question by Tony Hammond, East Preston, West Sussex on
the 15th of September,2004 about the Swandean Spitfire Special. That is
indeed a picture of the car in question.

I am currently helping restore it. It is now in St. Louis, MO, USA.

It is in a private collection and is in very good hands.

If Tony or anyone else knows any history or has any copies of pictures pertaining to the Swandean Spitfire Special, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank You C. B.

The Spitfire (LF Mk. XVIe SL721) was later restored to airworthy condition. Last I heard it was in the US but was damaged when the undercarriage collapsed while taxying. Not sure where it is now. Charlie will probably know.http://www.angelfire.com/hi5/spitfiremk2a/my-history-sl721.html

In the 1960s John Dodd of Kent, England put a Merlin engine (some say it actually was a Rover Meteor tank engine, but then this is a Merlin minus superchargers) in a car called "The Beast". Originally it had a grille from a Rolls Royce, but after complaints from them he had to change it. According to himself he once drove by a Porsche driver on the autobahn and this person then called Rolls Royce asking about their "new model". The Beast was once listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the world's most powerful road car. The engine came from a Boulton Paul Balliol training aircraft and gave 1262 bhp (941 kW) at 8500 feet (2,600 m). In the car the supercharger was removed so it "only" gave about 850 bhp (630 kW). The chassis was custom made with a fibreglass body and used a gearbox from a GM 400. The car was later restored by John Dodd's son Paul Dodd and he also has a 2050 bhp (1530 kW) twin-supercharged Rolls-Royce Griffon 37 litre engine from a late-model Spitfire he is willing to put in a car if somebody would be interested in buying it.

I saw another one with either a Merlin or Griffon in it at the Chailey Air Show last year. Posted a shot of it in the Photos forum at the time.
