I have no right to moralise & things are different now but it might help you sleep at night. Not sure what it was like in your day Commoner but I imagine your experience is much the same as mine. When I was young there would have been no question to answer. My parents weren't wealthy but like most people I knew were extremely proud & taught us lads to do the "right thing" without expecting a reward. If we got one that was a bonus. In my case I don't think I lost out on the deal. There was always the chance that the owner wouldn't claim it so it would then be legally yours with no argument. Of course, this also involved trusting the police or whoever you handed it in to. Also depends what it is. Cash is very tempting & difficult to trace.

Maybe I was more naive then but people seemed generally more trustworthy in those days although there's a surprising number of honest people around now.

Well, not to fall into that trap either Hagar, but kids are learning that being dishonest can pay off!  Test cheating is rampant in American schools...

The number of times i've been given a camera with the words "can you take our picture" tells me that there are a lot of trusting folk around.

.......right Hagar there is still a surprising number of people around who are honest...the guy in question here for instance............."poor but honest" is the saying..........."rich but honest" (really really rich)doesn't quite have the same ring to it does it...........not in my experience anyway..............commoner  ;)
