I'll add a few tips to help lower the amount you spend on fuel.
1) Don't waste the money on the high octane crap! Most newer cars (within 10-15 yrs) don't need it! read the owners manual and most will recommend 87 octane. I know there are going to be some that say that my car runs bad with anything less than high grade gas, well that is because you have started using high grade from the start and probably burned plugs and sensors, so now that is all it will use. Amazes me the amount of dealers that "recommend" high octane gas, it is in the owners manual what your vehicle needs.
If you DO need to use high octane gas, by a can of octane boost (around $2) and add it to a tank of "low grade gas"
At prices now will save you about $5 a fill up!
2) don't use the air conditioner if possible (belive CraigL mentioned this)
3) don't accelerate quickly, or avoid stopping fast, you see a traffic light that you think has been green awhile let off the gas and be prepared to stop.
4) Use cruise control (or auto pilot :) ) whenever possible
5) Watch your speed, going over the limit might get you there a minute earlier, but the extra fuel you burn isn't worth it, otherwise if you need to be somewhere leave the house earlier :)
4) No street racing, beyond popular belife, those little "chainsaw sounding" 2F2F cars look rediculious. If you must show off to your buddies and waste gas buy a '69 GTO!  ;D
5) Don't come to Sevierville, TN!!! You'll burn a tank of gas just trying to get a 1/4 mile down the road! The South has yet to figure out how to time traffic lights ;D Actually they haven't figured much out yet  ;)

Hope these help

1) In the UK Petrol is similar to Ice cream.  Whilst our American cousins have 400 odd flavours of Ice Cream we have three.  Vanilla, chocolate and strawberry.  It's the same with fuel, we have Unleaded, super-unleaded and diesel.  What is this about octane levels?

2) Air conditioning.  In the UK this is not fitted as standard and mostly involves putting the windows down.

3) Accelarating and Braking.  You dont have time to do this on the British Gridlock system that we call the roads.  A slow and steady 5MPH will get you most places in ample time to collect your P45.

4) Cruise control is known as "half a house brick on the throttle" over here and is illegal.

5) See three.  Also if the roads aren't clogged completely if you speed the cameras will getcha every time.

6) Street racing in the UK is performed by youths who have erm, borrowed someone elses car.  It is known here as Joyriding.  It usually ends in broken bones, court appearances and custodial sentences.

7) I promise not to go to Tennessee.  Ever.

Will ;)

Maybe the best way to save gas:
Leave your car at home and get out your bicycle. Or walk.

For those of us in the big cities,it should be possible to go by train, bus or tram.

Checked the prices yesterday. 90.7 cents/liter.

The highest US price I saw here at a quick glance is $2.48US/gal. That works out to be 89.9 cents/liter Canadian. Seems the Americans have caught up to us. Although prices are still over 100cents/liter in cottage country here in Ontario.

I took Hagar's UK price in USD and did the same thing. That works out to be 232.9 cents/liter Canadian or $2.33CND.  :o

Really expensive, but we're not too far away: $1.90 CND for one liter of unleaded gas.

Most stations in the U.S. have three octane ratings for sale. Different stations have different titles(Premium, Regular, Super Unleaded etc.)but the standard octane ratings are usually: 87-89-93. And not all US stations have diesel! Although it's common knowledge in the rest of the developed world that diesels are more efficient, the US EPA has mandated tougher laws making it cost prohibitive on smaller cars. Ergo, you only see Diesel engines on Large Trucks.

Glad you mentioned that. In fact there has been a new type of diesel being developed here in Canada. Bio Diesel. It's actually made from the old oil from fast food deep fryers. I'm told the exhaust smells a bit like french fries. Some buses in Toronto are running on it but it's not that common yet. Judging by the amout of fast food people in the US eat, they'd almost have a limitless supply is they adopted it.  ;D Isn't it ironic that Krispy Kream and McDonalds can actually save the world with all their fatty food.

Quite expensive. From cheapest to most expensive in the West.
1. USA
2. Canada
3. EU
4. UK

Canada is an oil producing nation so we should get some breaks. However, it's expensive to extract the oil because it comes in the form of tar sands. Gas in Alberta is usually not too bad because that's where the tar fields are located.

I really hate not being able to respond to a particular comment here, but forum restrictions don't let me, so I'm just gonna have to bow out of this one now.  lol

I believe you can get most cars on diesel here.  It's concidered a extra and you have to get it specially made up for you. You can also get them converted to propane as well although there aren't many places to fill up. A lot of taxis went this route.

Apparently, you've never spent 2 hours on the Eisenhower trying to get from O'hare to downtown...  ::) :)

No I haven't, anytime in the Chicago area I flew in

You do know, of course, that the super rich that live here in Chicago (like Oprah) have their own secret tunnel system to get them around town without having to deal with the kind of traffic that we commoners do, don't you?

Since I see no "smilies" after that comment, I must belive that you are serious. Are you?
If so that is unreal, when I win the lottery I'm going to have some tunnels built for me to get to the grocery store!

You guys in America are so privalidged. Our prices are terrible. They are almost unaffordable. It's so unfair. I recently saw prices at at 90p a litre! 90 pence a litre. Gordon Brown should be jailed!
I posted this in the jokes forum, I have converted the currency and taken into account different quantities between US and Uk gallons:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Is this working out correct? I've used our British litre and converted in into US gallons. Our fuel is about 85p a litre. Though it does depend on where u get it.

British Fuel:
1 litre (UK):
Windows 7 Pro 64bit
Intel Core 2 Duo E2180 2GHz
GA-P35-DS3L Intel P35
Kingston HyperX 4GB (2x2) DDR2 6400C4 800Mhz
GeForce 8800 GT 512MB
2 x 22" monitors
200GB Sata
Be Quiet! Straight Power 650W
