Diesel does 0,87 Euros for a liter here.
And they are planning to make it more expensive because of health reasons, but it's too late now.

First everyone was driving normal gasoline cars, diesels was too noisy and made nice black smoke (diesel as it used to be)
Then the government made special rules so companys could get partial ownership of the car, reducing the running costs for the employees. They went for the cheapest solution road-tax wise (so either LPG or diesel)...
As LPG powered cars (even G3 ones) tend to suck in acceleration, mileage and bonnet space, more and more people wanted to drive diesel.
So BMW and the rest of the european carbuilders started to make better diesels (HDI, TDI, GDI,...,...).
Result: most of the home-work travel is in diesel powered cars at the moment. But with the traffic jams they are running more hours at idle than they are driving at their designed clean RPM range...

They made their own problem, and Europe will hit back on our stupid BPM (for non-dutchies: additional tax when you buy a car on normal plates) which is not according to the rules, so the government is trying to find another way than the dreaded Gatso to squeeze a little more money out of the Dutch car owners...

A recent survey showed that car owners tend to reduce their other spendings just to drive their car.

$2.01 now, but this happens here every year. I live in a tourist town so they nail everyone for the extra money.
But these outrageous prices in America are un-needed.
All we need to do is stop paying other countries for thier oil and use our own.
There is enough oil in resereve in AK to last the US for well over 20 years!
Another way is if we could get all Americans to refuse to go to work just one day, everyone stay home, don't buy anything. I guarentee the gas companies would take months to recover from just one day! Prices would drop instantly!
Price gouging is "illegal" here in the US also, but that isn't stopping businesses taking advantage of this increase.
One good example of gouging is notice on a street where multiple gas stations are, and thier prices will probably be different. If gouging wasn't happening all would be the same price!
I can go into the next county and pay at least $.10 less a gallon, because it isn't a Tourist area, that is gouging!
I know how gas companies work, managed one for 13 years.
Very easy solution to a rediculious "Raping of American people"!! Just one day is all it would take.
How about Monday??? I think I'm staying home :)
I don't know what controls the fuel prices in other countries so I can't comment, but I do know why it is this way here in the US.

I don't know how tax affects it in different countries but this comparison is based on a rough average price in the US of $2.25 per gallon. (The UK Imperial Gallon is slightly larger than the US Gallon.)

Price per gallon (USD)
US. $2.25
Canada $3.32
Holland (diesel) $4.60
UK. $6.42
Germany $6.32

As most oil companies are US owned it seems someone is getting ripped off. ::)

PS. Corrected. Sorry. I just checked my calculations.

Fret, your idea of a gas boycott is flawed.  The problem is, people NEED gas.  Not buying it on a specific day would result in people getting extra gas the day before or the day after.  That's an email that's been circulating since the day after the internet was born.

As for the reserves in Alaska.  There's a reason we don't touch those, but forum restrictions prevent me from explaining it.  If you'd like me to PM the info to you, just let me know.   ;)
Great edit, Bob.

Scrapping all SUVs in the entire world and trading them in for small, compact cars would save a lot of gas...

I know the plan is flawed because "people need gas", that is why the keep increasing prices because they know people will pay for it!
And it wouldn't matter if the people bought it the day before, the billions of dollars oil companies would lose in just a day of no one buying gas???  Sure they would make a bunch the day before but not only would the oil companies lose out "tommorow" but also every other business because no customers, no employees showing for work, no deliveries, etc, direct result is a decrease in price to get the world "working" again

I don't know anything about a email circulating about this???
But the plan won't work because no-one would do it!
I also know the reasoning behind the AK reserves but if that happens we won't be needing any fuel, if you know what I mean!  ;)

And actually if everyone drove the gas guzzers it would be a good thing! All the gas would be gone, then we would have to find something else to bitch about ;D
But something else odd here is the local news reporting on a new "budget" airline coming to Knoxville, stated the prices of fuel, it is now almost the same price for jet fuel as it is for gasoline! So gas goes up in price and jet fuel goes down??? Figure that one out!

The issue isn't about saving gas.

Don't even start wth that anti SUV crap... >:(
Remember, some people around here think the little compacts are retarded as well.

Our F-350 gets 25+ MPG which is just fine.

if we stop driving cars for one day in holland, the government has to reduce funding on something more important (healthcare, social security)....
