well, i did a lot or research, and it fell under these guidlines

1. it cannot interfere with school
2. it cannot interfere with marching band
3. it should be an island most people dont go (when they go to HI)
4. climate should be average throughout the year
5. rainfall should be at a minimum
6. there's gotta be things to do.
7. as much beach as possible
8. low prices.

we were going to do direct, but that means 2 1/2 out of our 5 days is travel.

American provided us with the perfect flight. the only thing i don't like is the 4 hour trip in a MD-80, although it said "OR 717" which i can dig.

it couldn't interfere with school or band, although i would've gladly(school) ;)

I suggest taking a trip in the submarine. We did it in Honolulu, it was brilliant. The coral reefs and the ship wrecks. It was an amazing adventure. I fully reccomend it. If they do submarining were your going that is.

A couple of years ago a friend of mine accidentally took a box of 20bore shotgun cartridges through american customs in his hand luggage without them being picked up. So I don't think they're too likely to pick up a few drugs... :P

Sniffer dogs are pickey creatures and very good at picking these up. They arnt used all day so its luck of the draw if you through them

I had oranges in my bag at the Toronto airport (Pearson International), and the sniffer dog put its paws up on me. Security did a routine inspection, asked if I had anything and thoroughly went through my bag. They said that I have to declare the oranges if I bring them to international territory and they let me go.

Cool! Sounds like a fun time! :-)

Just relax and have a fun time without trying to cram too many things into one day.. ;-)

So what do you suppose the x-ray machine showed? A cardboard box crammed full of shotgun cartridges can't be difficult to spot. :P

Guns knives and various other things have gotten through. Its all a matter of luck or lack there of. The TSA are not the smartest bunch of people, but we all know my dislike of them ::)

I have an old backpack I take just about everywhere with me, and have quite a bit of stuff in it. I had been on a non-airline trip with my dad, and had a 4" knife in the outer pocket of said backpack. A few weeks later we go on vacation out of the country. (This is post-9/11) Knife still in backpack. I go through MEM security, SJU security, customs, and back without anyone noticing.  I didn't even know it was in there until we got home.

And this is coming from the guy that gets 'randomly selected' at EVERY SINGLE AIRPORT to be the one to get wanded and inspected. Gaaaaaa!

Never been a fan of the security at Memphis, they just seem so uninterested. And there are loads of them just standing around.

I've never been, but I hear that Maui and Kauai (did I spell that right?) are a little more off the beaten path, but there are probably some interesting day trips available to even smaller islands. As for going in the summer: being so close to the equator, Hawaii doesn't really get much variation in climate, as far as I know. Rainfall is pretty sporadic- like most island chains, they get fast-moving storms that arrive and depart pretty quickly. If I remember right, there's a dry and rainy period each year: April-Oct. is dry, and the rest of the year sees more rain.
I usually advise people wherever they go to avoid the typical tourist-y stuff, but in Hawaii, I'd definitely want to visit Pearl Harbor!!
