I'm willing to bet it doesn't take long for this to get locked..... ;D

Hopefully this can be a calm discussion between adults and not turned into a flame war.  ::)

As for my personal opinion on the death penalty- I'm all for it.

I will not attempt to further expand on my opinion as I don't want a flame war to erupt.  ::)

Ok - Just before anyone does try turning wild - please be mature. Respect each others views. Remember if anyone is responsible for getting a thread locked because they can't hold their tongues, then they are an idiot and deserve to be axed. ;)

Keep it good guys - it doesn't need to be a flame war.

Now I know none of us would ever really be so crazy.....
So? ANyone with a sixpence to add here?

I'll throw my two cents worth in......

I am for the death penalty.

My last job was building jails all around the US. I became quite discusted with the type of environment we, as taxpayers, are providing for the criminal element. They recieve, on average, free cable TV, Air conditioning in the summer, three square meals a day, free legal services, free continuing education including college, free use of computers, free exercise equipment, free libraryand magazines, and free laundry.

I am a frim believer of "If you can't do the time, don't do the crime". If you deprive someone of their life you should forfeit yours, not live a life that is comparable to what upper middle class in this country strive for and work their a$$ off to achieve. Besided I have spoken to  criminals that have  comitted crimes to get put back in jail because the life is better than that they could achieve on the outside.

In certain cases, death penalty wouldn't be a bad thing, but only if person's guilt can be proven by 99.999999 per cent.

But well, keeping them locked away for the rest of their life ain't that bad, too.

Depends on what you consider being criminal. Smoking Marijuana? Driving drunk? Stealing for survival's sake?

Personally i am not for it. In this day in age, needing to resort to the old philosophy of an Eye for an Eye. Why should someone who has killed a person then die themself? its a quick and easy escape, they knew once they did it they would at very least be spending their life in prison. So killing takes away that punishment so they never have to think about it again. And what good does it really do a victims family? they have to live with the knowledge of two deaths, their own and then the killer. They dont get the satisfaction of knowing the killer is big bubba's new shower toy, or knowing they are living through hell with the guilt of murder.

That is a very good point which I forgot. People commit crimes to get put back in jail it is so good there! Life is so comfortable that if one are without a home/family/job and one really hates someone - why not murder them?
If they are living a middle class life, then for many that is a great lpus for going to jail! Especially if they are living in poor housing!

I'm sure a victim's family won't feel remorse for a murderer...

Ben, I strongly disagree. Why would anyone murder another person only for going to jail again? That's illogical. Murderers are no killing machines, they are people like you and me who killed another person because, well, they needed money or because they've gone mad in a rush of alcohol or anger.
Murderers are not 'evil' by default. They're 'evil' because of their sourroundings.

Do you think Craig that if someone stabbed your Mum (sorry being personal) you would feel sorry for the killer being given a lethal injection? Sorry I love my Mum far too much and wouldn't be sad at all.

EDIT: We're posting at the same time, Lol!

Anyone with a slight conscience would feel something. Once the anger and grief have worn off. Its been documented in the past. Putting a person to death is a quick solution.

Of course i would, but i wouldnt want them to die by someone elses hand. I would much rather either i got to do it, or i was secure in the knowledge the person was suffering in prison. Sadly that doesnt hold true for our system as there is little in the way of justice for victims and their families in this country.

I don't know how anyone could be sad at seeing a man who has deliberately, and unprovoked kill someone, especially the vulnerable be sad or feel bad at seeing him be destroyed. It just doesn't seem to make any sense to me. I think it also isn't the eye for eye attitude, we don't say rapists should be raped, thiefs have all the possessions nicked etc - but isn't Murder so terrible that there should be only one solution? I particularly feel this way for terrorsits and child killers.

Well that is it isn't it? People are in prison for a term and then back out just like anyone else - AND WITH AN IMMUNITY TO THEIR NAME! >:( That really gets my back up - you could end up working next to a murderer!

See your now trying to split it into catagories. Rape or theft is completely differant to Murder. And there have been too many innocent people put to death to make it a fair solution.

Why are terrorists killing people?
- They want attention or they're being used.
Why are people raping children?
- Because of driving forces.

I don't understand why those people should be killed. They should be helped instead, by therapy (rapists), by talking (terrorists) or by removing the people in control (terrorists).
