depends really. My first experiance with a flight simulator was actually the armys Lynx simulator at Wallop, when i was young. The first flight sim i owned was flight sim on the Atari XE wireframe jet in chicago i think and a WW1 style Bi-plane which would drop X shaped bombs, which actually did nothing, and you could have a dogfight with another bi-plane. great fun. My first serious sim was prob flight unlimited.

wow, this topic really took off. I see noone has mentioned janes fighter anthology, I used to play that all the time untill I got FS98, I even played it a little recently just to relive old times  ;D. The great thing about that game was that it had a huge selection of planes.

First flight sim.. wow, "Tornado low level - (TLL)" on the Sinclair Spectrum circa 83(?). Flying under bridges... magnificent!
Next one? FS2002 on a really poor system, so bad i sold it after 2 weeks.
Finally discovered system was to blame, so bought FS98 on a new(er) system(cheap), now running FS9 fully maxed!
How times change!
