your first flight sim

Postby TacitBlue » Fri Feb 11, 2005 9:18 pm

Maybe this belongs in the games and software forum, But I thought more people would see it here. Mods, move it if you like.

I was wondering what everyones first flight simulator was. Mine was "Chuck Yeager's Advanced Flight Simulator" circa 1991 or 92. I was only 8 or 9 when I got it, so I dont remember a whole lot about it except that the cessna 172 stalled at anything more than a 5* climb regardless of airspeed. and the terain was made entirely out of textureless squares and triangles. At the time though, it was the greatest thing ever. So, what was yours, and what was it like?

I had that one, for the Commodore 64, the first flight game I remember really getting into was Microprose's Gunship on the 64, everything was just lines, it was great!
Still no linked images allowed around here Paz! Naughty...

If i remember right i started on Siera Pro Pilot on our old 166 IBM.  It was great back then and i loved it.  In fact i still have it and tempted to install it again lol.  Pretty nice texture quality for back then.  And it was made when system requirements accualy meant it will run nicely not like crap :P  Only problem i had with it was it only contained the US 48 and not canada or even alaska and hawaii.  Always flew the Citation for the most part.  Eventualy i went to FS98 which was low on texture quality but was a little more realistic flying wise.  Off to find Pro Pilot now.  Got me interested in giving it another chance :P  Might even post some screenies if they will take right ;)

hmm... this may not count but I'm pretty sure it was aerofighters assault for the N64. that was my first aviation-related game, I believe my first actual flight sim was fs2000.

A large cardboard box, a piece of a broom handle,
and a dream. I flew it a million miles. I shot down
a thousand planes. The FPS were great.
My Dad painted the box green and mounted the
handle on a spring. That was 195_, too long ago.

I was going to say a wire frame 747 simulator on a TRS-80 but then LoneEagle reminded me of my several trips to the moon in my own cardboard box.

I'm just a newbie compared with you lot. I always said I wouldn't play games on my PC. Sometimes wish I stuck to that. My first sim (I think) was Jane's WWII Fighters. I had just fitted a video card & wanted something to check it out with. First civil sim was Flight Unlimited II. I really wanted the original Flight Unlimited 95 but couldn't find it. I finally managed to track it down some time after getting interested in CFS1. It sort of degenerated after that & I now have all versions of FS/CFS from FS98. ::)

PS. All I really wanted was something to practice my R/C flying on when the weather was too bad to go out on the flying field. I found that none of the above was suitable & I found a freeware R/C sim several years too late. If I'd known about it 6 years ago I wouldn't be sitting here now.
