Take an american football team, strip them of their armour and put them up against a mainline Rugby team. The yanks would be flattened.

I watched some of the Super Bowl last night and it was silly. There seemed to be too many ways to get a foul or a penalty so play never got underway and the score thing at the top of the screen was just irritating.

I doubt they would. average weight in the NFL is about 245lbs, and these guys well most are all muscle. Its completely pointless getting into the rugby football debate it could go on for years:) but my comment is, when you show me a rugby player who can do a 40 yard dash in 4.2 or less then we'll discuss it some more ;D Seriously though i still rate the game of football much higher, but again its a personal preferance thing, its a game that once you really understand it, it becomes alot better.
As for the penalties, well i wont argue there, but i think you'll find thats the same for most of our NFL fans here. Its ridiculous what they call now, but we can all thank the Colts for that one, sorry Bman

when you have olympic fast sprinters who are 5-11 and 260 lbs playing corner back (a smaller position) it is not going to be a fair fight. the average nfl lineman benchpresses almost twice his weight

Do you ignore completely the size and stature of a professional rugby player? Huge simply doesn't do some of them justice.

Woody i have been around rugby players, like i said before my old PE teacher was John Sleighthome or however you spell it, and he is a huge person. But these American football players are just bigger, most rugby players i have seen have all been in the 15 to 17 stone mark. the couple of football players i have seen my ex's dad included have all been 16 to 24 stone. some are smaller like rugby players the size depends on the position.

So if american footballers are so big and tough, how come they need to wear body armour? ;D

lol, differant style of play. Rugby is more about below the waist tackles and actually not aiming to hit someone in the head but more fluid hits and skilled takedowns. In football its all about explosive head on shots which tend to scramble the brain, seperate shoulders break ribs and so on. Both sports are equally as brutal i think americans have been sensible enough to realise the benifits of looking after their players:)

That, and most Rugby players don't get paid tens of millions of dollars to do what they do.

It's like an arms race. The players keep getting bigger, the armor keeps getting more sophisticated... eventually they'll be wearing super high-tech powered exoskeletons. THEN I'll start watching on a regular basis! ;D
