Here's another memory: we had an insulated tin box outside the front door for milk! There was a fellow called "the milkman" who would pick up the empty bottles and leave full ones- with the cream still on top! Swear to God, it's true... ;D And oh, yeah, the ice cream truck... with the rack of bells on top, not some lame recorded jingle played thru a crappy speaker... been a long time...

We had a hole in the floor of the larder for keeping things fresh. Mum used to keep the milk bottles in a bucket of water. The milkman* still calls next door although I get mine from the supermarket now. He's too expensive. People like me will be the reason for this & other traditions eventually dying out.

*If I remember I'll go out & take a photo of him & his electric milk float tomorrow morning.

Heck, up until 1977, my Grandmother lived in a house that she'd been in for 44 years and it had a real root cellar. All it was a big hole dug under the house. You literally climbed down a ladder (I say this loosely) that was partially made out of an old tree root that was found while digging the root cellar. She had shelves down there for her canning and bins for potatoes.

My Grandparents had a "Bunkhouse" on their property. This was basically the naughty room that my Grandfather was sent to when he was misbehaving. He spent allot of time in the bunkhouse because he was mischievous beyond words. My Grandmother would call him a rotten scoundrel and smile as she remembered all of his antics. My uncle spent many a day in there as well. My Grandfather and my uncle were definitely cut from the same cloth when it came to misbehaving....lol.

I'm nearly 40 ....... and we only got an electric fire and central heating at home when I turned 18 ......We had a coal fire up untill then. Waking up to Ice on the inside of your bedroom window  was regular during the winter and probably accounts for me not feeling the cold as much as others.

My mates and I had a downright dangerous way of keeping the weeds down the back yard at home .... It involved several cans of petrol and large numbers of matches. My Mothers only comment when she saw us ...... "Mind you don't singe your eyebrows."

The greatest thing ever when I was a kid was jumping our bikes off of ramps. We had one set up at the bottom of a hill, so you would be going really fast when you hit it. Problem was, if you didnt hit it dead center, it would fall over to one side, and direct you straight into a tree. Im surprised I never went face first into that tree, always managed to side swipe it and scrape up my left arm and leg... good times

Oh yes, the bike jumps. Once I made the tragic error of taking a 10-speed off a dirt ramp... the girl watching me was not as impressed as I'd hoped, and I took a lot of skin off my arm as I skidded about 10 feet  after wiping out and basically bending the bike in half!  I also spent many happy hours on my orange Huffy with the non-inflatable hollow tires playing "garbage can polo" with my pals in the cul-de-sac by my house. That bike was indestructable, and I guess I was, too. I used to bounce much better when I was 9 or 10 years old!
The best thing, of course, was to see how many guys we could fit on one bike, then go flying down the very steep avenue into the center of town...how did I survive to adulthood, I wonder? :D

When I was growing up my Dad was foreman engineer in a massive "Assylum" in Kent.  It's gone now but I have very strong memories of playing all over the site.  All of my friends parents worked up there so us kids got away with things that I wouldn't allow my daughter to consider.  Growing up around people with Mental Health problems has definately affected the way I interact with this section of society.

One summers evening a patient came into our house during tea.  We were sitting around the table eating and she suddenly appeared at the kitchen door with a mug in one hand and a bottle of milk in the other.  She had end stage syphillus and was quite deformed as a result and was demanding coffee.  Dad got up and escorted her outside, all the while she was screaming that she was going to kill him.  I can clearly remember that he said "You can't XXXXX, I'm not at work today.  Come and see me Monday at 9 O'Clock and do it then.  You know where my office is, don't you?"

She was taken away by several burly blokes in white jackets.

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's, X-boxes, no
video games at all, no 99 channels on cable, no video tape movies, no surround sound, no cell phones, no personal computers, no internet or internet chat rooms..........WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents. We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just walked in and talked to them!

I may only be 17 but i remember those kind of times...  Sure we had video games and such but where I grew up we did more outside then in.  Always remember going to my one friends house...we were always doing something stupid (blowing stuff up, building whatever, and much more dangerous things when we were on the 2 ATVs...) wait a sec...Still do some of that same junk lol::)  Ah the painfull memories, scars, and that one crooked finger :P

There was so much more to do and we were always happier.  Now everyone is so spred out and no one wants to do anything anymore.  Its all about money and what you have insted of coming up with new ideas with what you can find.  Most of the highschool hangouts are now shut down because of the drugs and other problems.:-/  There was a pool hall just for people 16 to 18 to hang out...Now its closed and long gone.  Its amazing what this new age is becoming.  Just wish there was a way to go back to the past before all the fun was sucked out of everything :(

I'm only 20, but as many of the other young'uns had a very eventful upbringing ;D

Several broken bones due to jumping out of oak trees ;D (surprised I can still walk!), hill sledding on the crates you could find outside the local supermarket, carting, in fact, I used to do most of the stupid stuff they do on Jackass (and some of the dangerous ;)) whih is probably why I don't find it funny ::)

Did anybody ever try to re-create the great light-sabre scenes with tree branches ??? ::) ;D :P

lol , broken bones, brings back a load of memories.  Here is one:

I came to a hockey game without the sakes, and got hit in the foot with a puck.  Well it hurt, but i thought its because i got hit DUH!!  Pain was supposed to go away in couple of days.  It didnt and after 3 weeks of agony i went to see my doc.  He x-rayed my foot and it turned out that i had 3 broken toes.  And since i walked for three weeks, the bone, where it was fractured, turned into dust.  So i had to walk in cast for 3 months.  Thats how my hockey career ended.  :(

LOL!!! Something tells me your grampa and uncle misbehaved just so they could hang out in there undisturbed; to them it was probably "the Clubhouse"!!
