Fozzer here again with another interesting subject... ...!

What are your feelings about being taught History at school..?
Many pupils are un-interested in it, and apparently it is being ignored in the recent curriculum after passing the age of 14..!

Are you interested in your past..?

How far back in historical records do you remember, and which time you are particularly interested in..?

Recent times: 1600 AD - to date?
Medieval times: 1066 AD - 1600 AD?
Dark ages: 400 AD - 1066 AD?
Ancient history: 55 BC - 400 AD: Romans?
Pre-Biblical times: Egyptians/Greeks/Chinese/etc?
Stone age/Iron age times?
Origins, and movements of man: 100,000 years ago?

....or EVERYTHING from the distant past, to the future..!

I was taught History as part of the curriculum in my time at school in the 1930's/1940's, and I am well aware of details the distant past, and was always fascinated by it...!

I think there's something on the books to make History compulsory up to the age of 16.

As for me, most things from the year 400 onwards intrest me.

Oh,almost everything interests me, but I seem to be in my best form (judgring from my marks) in the history of the 20th century.

If you've got a really,really good teacher, history can be the best subject in the whole world!

I tend to forget specific dates and locations of events, but I always felt that understanding what came before what, and what it meant for such-and-such region, was helpful in understanding events today, and what might happen in the future.  I was always fascinated by ALL of human history, but nowadays I think more about the future.
  My favorite history teachers in school were always those who injected some civics into it; who tried to correlate past events with current ones. But for most, I guess, history studies are nothing more than memorizing boring lists of names and dates (or nationalist propoganda), so none of history's valuable lessons get to sink in. And dropping it at age 14 is just stupid- maybe they should hold off until around that age and start it then, when kids are better able to place the past in its contemporary context.  Ah well...sometimes  it seems that school in the "civilized" world is devolving to the point where kids will just be drugged constantly, and learn nothing of any use whatsoever. When I was still a kid, the arts were always threatened with the budget axe, but now they're even talking about slashing science, math, phys. ed.(!)  and- gasp- team athletics(!!!)  in American schools. Guess they feel the money's better spent on metal detectors and cameras in the bathrooms, not to mention nurses who can prescribe Ritalin.  I think about the future a lot, but I probably shouldn't. It's a little depressing...

Hi Foz. Like many others, I was completely uninterested in History all the time I was at school. This was probably due more to the way it was taught rather than the subject itself. All those dates to remember & suchlike, what a bore. One period I was always interested in was called by the general term Ancient History & covered everything from prehistoric times to the Roman Empire. Unfortunately this was only treated as a separate subject in the first year at Grammar School. I opted for other subjects as soon as possible after that & dropped History altogether. As any regular will know I am now fascinated by the subject. Not only that but ALL history, although my main interest is in the two World Wars & the development of aviation. The two are inevitably linked as the greatest strides in aviation were made during these conflicts. This passion started almost as soon as I left school & I'm a self-taught amateur historian - not always right but I learn more every day.

I think it's a complete waste of time teaching history in school unless the teacher is passionately interested in the subject & makes it interesting for the pupils. I wouldn't have minded someone like our Felix as my history teacher.

Im 14 and currently doing my G.C.S.E's and I dont have to do history. Which is  a relief  o.k I suppose because I found it boring. But i'm sure there is something in the past that will spark my passion for history. I have'nt found it yet

My favourite subjects at school were History and Geography.... ...!
Maths was, (still is), a gift for some people...certainly not me... ...!
Science was interesting. It meant I could create explosions in my bed-room, armed with few chemicals.
...and electrics, electronics, and mechanics, led me onto my trades in later life... ...!

My history lessons put "time" in proportion, and my geography lessons meant that I would never, ever get lost... ...!
My ancient history books and ancient maps of the world make good bed-time studying/reading... ...!

 History and Science were the only classes I passed in the couple of years I hung around for the torture that was high school, every now and then I come across one of my old grade reports which is quite interesting, F's in every column except history and science where there are A's.
 I guess even in school if I wasn't interested in something I just ignored it, still the same now.

I enjoy history, mostly from the History Channel on
TV.

And of course, aviation history.

My family history is accurate to around 1700.

I teach Industial Technology and deal with the history
of technology in class. I still teach drafting along with
CAD. We have a very good aviation program along
with a flight simulator at our school.

I always loved ancient history, I think it started when my family lived in Greece (my dad was in USAF) when I was very young. That country is full of ancient history, of course they all are, but Greece is also full of ruins, so you are constantly reminded of it. Im also developing a greater interest in WW2.

As for teaching history, I definatly think that it should be taught in school. As a few of you have said already, it should only be taught by someone who is actually interested in it, then it is a great class to take. I had a history teacher for one year of highschool that was also the gym teacher, he didnt give a hoot about history, and so the class sucked.

Alas 'Piggy' Brown my history teacher at school was a useless alcoholic who was always smashed by 08.30 every day!
Like Hagar I'm self-taught, all aspects of history interest me, particularly European history, and of course aviation

You should all meet my history teacher. His impersonations of going over the top and bayonet drill are some of the funniest things i've ever seen.

Unfortunately.......... or maybe fortunately ... yes fortunately my history teacher at highschool was an absolute stunner. I would go into detail but there's youngsters about. Didn't learn much ..... but the fantasies endure

History teaches us so much that you don't realize it.

Though I admit, there must be a drug in world history books that make you sleep.  All I remember from my freshman year history class was listening to pink floyd when the teacher wasn't looking, and waking up at the end of class.  Got an "A"!
