Postby Fozzer » Sat Jan 29, 2005 5:16 am

Hello all..!

I am curious to know if anyone has tried this system out..?
Free telephone calls to and from your computer using a microphone headset and software.

Have a peek here for a review...>>

http://www.cix.co.uk/~davedorn/reviews/ ... /skype.htm

Ideal for Broadband users, iffy for 56k Modem users, and appears not to be designed for Win '98 users, (Only Win XP and Win 2000).

Cheers all...!

Paul.

P.S. Reference was made to the system on the recent BBC TV "Gadget Show".

I've used similar systems to this, and it works great. I was online chatting (literally) with Romulus for a couple of hours a while back, what a laugh ;D I now have a fund of naughty jokes that should see me through for a bit :o ;D
These systems are good, quite a few of the more popular programs like AIM have a microphone and even webcam facility built in to their chat-screen. Still haven't got the webcam working yet >:( :P :-[
Its a bugger that my mic packed up the other day, must get a new one ASAP...

Skype... good for calling to places where using a normal phone line is too expensive.

Skype is the best. Me and Jared used it when we flew online last week and it seemed to work fine.

My dad told me that his partner in the buisness they own talks to family in Venezuela with absolutly NO lag from the Midwestern US.

Hi all... ;D...!

Many thanks for all the replies... ;D...!

Would I be correct in thinking that the person you are calling must also have the special software installed to  recieve the call...?
..and must all the users be using the same software program for it to work..?

In other words, you can only communicate with each other using the special software installed in your computers..?

Cheers all... ;D...!

Yup, thats it Fozz, both must have Skype to do it. You can't call someone with Skype and then thier phone will ring, although that would be nice! :)

My daughter and her kids use ICQ for this feature (mic and cam) all the time with me.....I get to see the girls dancing and whooping it up all the time.....cross the country and no long-distance charges apply.......

YEP! Skype is a very nice way of doing this, as mentioned you can place calls to another persons real phone line, but that will cost you money in the long run.

caling another computer is absolutely free.... (For now...)

Hi Ben... ;D...!

..so it's a bit like MSN Messenger...You must both be using the computer and logged on to the special program at the same time...!
...no 'phones ringing... ::)...!
(If I remember correctly, you could also communicate with others by voice, using MSN Messenger and a headset...)...?

I avoided MSN Messenger and ICQ, (I-Seek-You), long ago....too many unpleasant types on there that I want to avoid, and embarrassing to delete them from my address book... ;)...like... "Why aren't you talking to me?" ... :'(...LOL...!

Cheers all... ;D...!

What I hate most is not the networks or its members (they didn't invent an ignorelist for nothing ;)), but the programs themselves. Thus I'm using multi-protocol (capable of communicating both with ICQ and MSN) programs, like Miranda.

One thing I have found useful for the past few years is free text messaging from my PC to mobile 'phone users, particularly family members.
An excellent way of contacting them quickly, or in emergencies, when the are away from a land-line 'phone.

The system works very well with a monthly limit, which I never exceed... 8)...!

Cheers all... ;D...!
